Robert Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth movie.
By December 2024, according to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, it was announced that David Eggers had agreed to collaborate on the script and direct a follow-up to the 1986 film Labyrinth, originally directed by Jim Henson and starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie.
Since then, there hasn’t been much information regarding the project, but Deadline has recently confirmed the news.
In collaboration with Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, more famously known as Sjón, Eggers is working on the current project. Notably, they previously teamed up for the 2022 film “The Northman.” Additionally, it was just announced that Eggers is directing a new werewolf movie titled “Werwulf,” which he’s also co-writing with Sjón. This upcoming movie from Focus Features is slated for release on December 25, 2026.
What else do we know about Robert Eggers’ Labyrinth movie?
In a collaboration, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are set to co-produce the upcoming film adaptation of “Labyrinth” by Eggers, together with Lisa Henson. Meanwhile, Brian Henson will hold an executive producer role in the project.
At present, specific details about the movie plot are being kept secret. It’s undecided if Connelly will return to portray Sarah Williams again.
In the original Labyrinth film, a 16-year-old girl named Sarah finds herself with exactly thirteen hours to navigate through a complex maze, or labyrinth, in order to rescue her baby brother Toby. The Goblin King, Jareth, has granted this task after she wished for him to be taken away from her.
In 2015, Eggers launched his career as a feature film director with “The Witch,” featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson. Subsequently, in 2019 he released “The Lighthouse” starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Following that, he created “The Northman.” His latest work is the upcoming “Nosferatu,” set for release in 2024, with Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlock and Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hunter.
As of now, a specific launch date for the movie adaptation of Eggers’ Labyrinth remains undisclosed. However, you can enjoy the original Labyrinth film on various streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and more.
