In the recent Xbox Developer Direct event, there was a spotlight dedicated to id Software’s upcoming game, Doom: The Dark Ages, which is the next title in the acclaimed first-person shooter series. The developers showcased some of the game’s novel elements and gameplay mechanics, and they announced that Doom: The Dark Ages will be available for purchase on May 15, 2025.
id Software’s detailed exploration of Doom: The Dark Ages gives a sneak peek into what players can anticipate in their next demon-filled journey. Unlike Doom Eternal, which focused on verticality and airborne action, Doom: The Dark Ages seems to be returning to its roots, drawing combat inspiration from the 1993 original. The trailer demonstrates the Slayer skillfully dodging enemy attacks and navigating the battlefield while simultaneously shooting at adversaries.
In the latest preview, it’s clear that close-quarters fighting takes center stage in Doom: The Dark Ages. One of the Slayer’s fresh tools is the Shield Saw, which he can hurl at foes with a simple button press or use defensively to ward off incoming assaults.
In Doom: The Dark Ages, although it’s not an open-world game, players have ample spaces to traverse. Special locations allow for summoning a dragon mount for the character Slayer to ride. This dragon is armed with a machine gun for combat purposes. Moreover, the medieval backdrop houses colossal beasts, and in order to balance the fight, Slayer can control a giant mech.
In approximately four months, starting May 15, we’ll be launching Doom: The Dark Ages. This game was among the four showcased during the Xbox Developer Direct event.
