The news that Robert Downey Jr would be playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday remained hidden until it was unexpectedly unveiled during the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024.

Recently, Benedict Cumberbatch chatted with Variety to publicize his upcoming film titled The Thing With Feathers. During this conversation, discussions veered towards his new movie, but the interviewer couldn’t resist asking about Avengers: Doomsday. It was during this segment that Benedict Cumberbatch shared his feelings when Robert Downey Jr was revealed as Doctor Doom.
In 2024, during San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), The Imitation Game actor revealed that he found out about Robert Downey Jr’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) while watching live footage. Overwhelmed by the news, he immediately sent a message to Feige, exclaiming, “I texted ‘What on earth? Fantastic what on earth.’ Essentially, I was saying, ‘What on earth? Great what on earth.’
During discussions about the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” Cumberbatch revealed he wouldn’t show up as Doctor Strange in the 2026 movie. But he did promise fans that Doctor Strange will play a significant role in the following Avengers film, titled “Avengers: Secret Wars.
Besides Benedict Cumberbatch, numerous other actors, such as Don Cheadle (War Machine) and James Gunn (DC co-CEO), were equally taken aback and thrilled by Robert Downey Jr’s comeback announcement. In September 2024, during an interview with Collider, Don Cheadle exclaimed, “I was really caught off guard when I heard the news.” Similarly, in December 2024, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I was genuinely excited about it. I’ve always admired Robert Downey Jr, and I think he’s an excellent fit for the role.
