Former contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” and model Cheryl Burke recently shared insights about her troubled childhood and how it influenced her life. This has sparked interest among fans, making them eager to learn more about her experiences with trauma.

So, here’s what Cheryl Burke shared about her early years in a recent conversation.

Childhood trauma left Cheryl Burke feeling ‘disgusted’

Celebrity TV host, Cheryl Burke, shared that her past childhood hardships made her feel repulsed whenever encountering kind individuals who showed her warmth. She further explained that she felt unworthy of such kindness because she had become accustomed to mistreatment. Moreover, she stated that the negative feelings she experienced as a child were all she was familiar with.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “For me, the past traumas I’ve faced made it difficult to maintain romantic relationships. Just like how an unwanted item in a game ruins the experience for me, so did certain people in my life. Even when I had a good dance partner who respected me, I couldn’t shake off this feeling of unease.

In the podcast discussion, Cheryl Burke opened up about being drawn to unhealthy romantic partners due to the absence of a positive male role model in her life. She also shared that she had unwittingly welcomed toxic individuals into her life as a result of past traumas. Among these traumas was witnessing her father’s infidelity, even though he was separated from her mother.

Furthermore, Burke spoke candidly about the challenging experience of testifying against her caretaker, who abused both her and her step-sister when they were just 9 years old. She mentioned that it was due to her sister’s friend’s actions that the caretaker was sentenced. In addition, Burke admitted that she had been self-doubting (or gaslighting herself) during that period. The dancer and model also disclosed that her mother was not permitted to be with her during the trial.

Back in 2022, Cheryl Burke embarked on a personal journey of abstinence after her split from Matthew Lawrence. Last year marked the third anniversary of this journey, which she acknowledged through a heartfelt Instagram post. The caption read, “Celebrating my 40th year, single, and three years into celibacy with self-assuredness and insight. This voyage is all about self-love, personal development, and living life according to my own rules…
