As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the recent stir surrounding A24’s acclaimed period drama, “The Brutalist,” following its impressive three-win sweep at the Golden Globe Awards. However, it seems this victory has been overshadowed by a wave of criticism due to the film’s AI involvement. It has come to light that the creative team employed AI tools from Ukrainian specialist Respeecher to augment the Hungarian dialogues delivered flawlessly by Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones in the movie.
The film ‘The Brutalist’ is helmed by director Brady Corbet, who collaborated with Mona Fastvold on the script. The star-studded cast includes Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé, and Alessandro Nivola. The production team consists of Andrew Lauren, D.J. Gugenheim, Brian Young, Andrew Morrison, Trevor Matthews, and Nick Gordon.
The Brutalist director Brady Corbet clarifies AI usage
After facing some heat from gamers and critics alike, I’ve got to say that Corbet has come clean about the AI used in his movie. It turns out it was just employed during the post-production of the Hungarian dialogues. Since its big screen release, the film has been well-received with a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Corbet (as reported by Deadline), Adrien and Felicity’s acting is unique to them. They spent months working with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to polish their accents. Additionally, advanced Respeecher technology was utilized exclusively in Hungarian dialogue editing, focusing on enhancing specific vowels and letters for precision. No changes were made to the English language. This process, handled by our sound team and Respeecher during post-production, aimed to maintain the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity’s performances when translated into Hungarian, rather than replacing or altering them. It was all done with great regard for their craft.
Regarding the application of Generative AI for the movie’s final scene, it was made clear that all building images depicted were manually sketched by artists. “Judy Becker and her team did not rely on AI for the creation or rendering of any buildings,” he explained. “To add clarity, in the memorial montage displayed in a specific shot, our editing team purposely created visuals meant to resemble low-quality digital renderings from the 1980s.
He went on to say, ‘The Brutalist is a movie that explores the intricacies of humanity, with all its labor, imagination, and unity behind its production. Our team’s achievements in this project make us immensely proud.’
