It seems as though Destiny 2 may be winding down, given the declining player base and insufficient captivating content. Yet, it’s not that there are no creative concepts being considered for the game; rather, the emphasis appears to be on maximizing “Return on Investment”.
For quite some time now, enthusiasts of this particular game have expressed a desire for the inclusion of player housing, allowing them to personalize a place they could call their own within the game. Interestingly, numerous developers had plans to incorporate this essential MMO feature, but these plans were halted due to concerns that it wouldn’t generate enough revenue.
Destiny 2 Player Housing
According to former Bungie community manager Lianna Rupert, a significant number of developers within the company advocated for including player housing in Destiny 2. Despite frequent proposals, there were doubts about whether this feature would generate sufficient revenue to cover the development costs associated with it.
The community manager expressed, “Wow, numerous developers have longed for this, and here’s why: It’d be fantastic! However, there are countless adjustments that would need to be made in the game and internally regarding resources. To make it happen while maintaining a profitable return on investment, it would be quite challenging.” They added with enthusiasm, “That’s the dream!
As a gamer, I can’t help but notice how many Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games offer player housing systems, and it’s clear that these features contribute significantly to the game’s financial stability. For instance, Elder Scrolls Online by Zenimax boasts an expansive player housing system filled with top-tier homes and furniture. The income generated from these premium options keeps the game running smoothly. Similarly, even older titles like Lord of the Rings Online manage to stay relevant through the revenue generated from players who want the best virtual abodes.
It’s important to note that incorporating Player Housing into Destiny 2 wouldn’t be a straightforward task, but given the right approach, it could potentially generate revenue, especially during times when the player base was larger.
