For several days, there’s been a lot of talk among Reddit users, and more lately, those on X, concerning the potential existence of secret bot lobbies within Marvel Rivals.
At first, the posts didn’t seem to get much attention, but as more people kept playing and engaging, the subject started gaining popularity.
Currently, numerous social media users claim they’ve been shifted into lobbies that appear to be heavily controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) characters, or bots, following a losing streak of more than two games.
While the community feels deceived, the developer NetEase has remained silent on the matter.
Discovered On Reddit
The discussion soared to a higher level when Reddit user ‘ciaranxy’ shared an extensive study called “Marvel Rivals Secret Quickplay Bots: A Comprehensive Guide,” instead.
In this analysis, Ciaranxy outlines their methodical examination of gaming sessions spanning a week, ultimately determining that Marvel Rivals deliberately employs bot matches as a strategy to keep players who consistently lose involved.
Based on the research by ciaranxy, it is common for players who have lost two straight Quickplay games to be matched against bots instead.

In this match setup, there are four real players paired with two artificial players (bots) on one team, while the other team consists entirely of six bots.
It’s worth noting that there’s a penalty for exiting these bot lobbies. This means that if you happen to lose a game, you’ll be required to compete against bots again.
On Reddit, some users speculate that NetEase might be intentionally delaying bot fixes until the player base becomes extremely frustrated. The idea being, if players stay engaged for longer periods and become more annoyed, they may ultimately opt to purchase the Battle Pass or items from the in-game store.
Unless the community protests loudly, the developers are unlikely to react.
Own Tests Confirm The Theory
To confirm these assertions, my associate Morgan Park, hailing from the realm of the gaming magazine PC Gamer, carried out a set of independent trials himself.
He played several matches, closely observing the behavior of opponents and teammates.
Following a deliberate string of defeats, he ultimately uncovered obvious indications of automated players. These adversaries bore common names such as “DieForMe” or “LanettMa“, and displayed unusual inconsistency in their gameplay.

Some bots exhibited impressive reaction times but were poor at finishing attacks.
As a keen observer, I’ve been using kill cams to analyze gameplay, and it struck me that multiple player accounts appear to be freshly created, all labeled as level 1. Moreover, I noticed an interesting restriction on each profile, limiting my access.
These findings are closely aligned with ciaranxy’s observations.
Negative Impact On The Player Experience
It’s quite clear that the community feels disheartened. Many players sense they’ve been deceived, thinking they’re battling authentic adversaries and gaining priceless insights from their encounters.
In reality, they are placed in bot matches that give a false sense of improvement.
As a gamer, I must admit that Marvel Rivals is a blast! However, it seems the game could use a bit more consistency. After winning three matches and only losing one, being tossed into a Bot match felt a tad unexpected, like a sudden rain shower on a sunny day. Maybe a rule adjustment to limit Bot matches after consecutive wins would be ideal? Just a thought!

This tactic is perceived as NetEase’s strategy to prolong player engagement, achieved by offering them less challenging victories following a string of disappointing defeats.
To date, NetEase has remained silent regarding the accusations, which some in the community view as an implicit acknowledgment that these claims may lack merit.
The call for a fair and authentic gaming experience is growing louder.
It remains to be seen whether NetEase will respond to the criticism and make any changes.
