Legendary WWE Superstar John Cena, approaching the last year of his wrestling tenure, has taken a moment to reminisce about some extraordinary instances throughout his career. Known for his 16 WWE World Heavyweight Championship titles, John Cena is all set to make his comeback at the WWE Royal Rumble event in 2025, marking his initial appearance since then.
Over the past two decades, Cena has garnered numerous accomplishments such as multiple titles and wins in significant bouts. His professional wrestling journey started with a debut match against Kurt Angle on an episode of SmackDown in 2002. Since that time, he’s fought in more than 2,200 matches.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at John Cena’s illustrious career that’s been characterized by an almost unparalleled reign of success. He’s won the lion’s share of his matches, ushering in the “Super Cena” era where he vanquished some of WWE’s formidable adversaries. His staggering win count of 1,771 speaks volumes about his prowess. But lately, even a legend like him has faced hurdles. In singles competitions, he’s been grappling with the challenge of securing that elusive victory, despite his past dominance.
From 2016 onward, John Cena’s wrestling performances have grown less frequent. His last singles win was against Triple H back in 2018. In his latest singles match, Solo Sikoa handed him a decisive defeat at Crown Jewel in November 2023. As he embarks on his retirement tour, Cena has discussed which of his losses have left the deepest impact on him.
The loss that meant the most to John Cena as a storyteller in WWE
During an interview with Collider, John Cena recently discussed the losses in WWE that affected him the most as a storyteller. He reminisced about his wins and losses, mentioning, “There were instances where I had many victories, and there were times when I faced numerous defeats. Notable among these are definitely my loss to The Rock in Miami, which was truly exceptional, and Kevin Owens’ debut, a memorable and entertaining encounter; also, my bout with Rob Van Dam at Hammerstein Ballroom.
As a gamer, I’d share some of the matches that left me feeling defeated yet victorious in my storied career:
* The Rock at WrestleMania 28 (2012) – a battle I couldn’t win but one that set the stage for future triumphs.
* Kevin Owens at Elimination Chamber (2015) – a grueling contest that tested my limits and made me stronger in the process.
* Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand (2006) – an epic showdown that pushed me to new heights, proving I could go the distance against the best.— Wrestle Ops (@WrestleOps) January 15, 2025
Significant defeats that John Cena, the 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, has not forgotten to this point are major milestones in his wrestling career. His loss to The Rock took place at WrestleMania 28 in 2012, symbolizing The Rock’s comeback to singles action following an eight-year absence. The match with Kevin Owens was particularly notable as it represented Owens’ debut on the WWE main roster at Elimination Chamber in 2015.
At the ECW One Night Stand event in 2006, Cena battled Rob Van Dam. That crowd, traditionally supportive of ECW, was largely on Van Dam’s side. With Edge lending a hand, Rob Van Dam managed to secure the WWE Championship that fateful night.
