To be fair, I’m hoping that if the movie sticks to the original storyline from the 90s, Lobo’s actions are shown in a negative light. However, I have no intention of watching this upcoming film because Supergirl has been mistreated enough on the big screen as it is. Unfortunately, this article doesn’t provide much clarity about Lobo’s true origins. Contrastingly, The Hollywood Reporter had the nerve to claim they knew more about his background.

Comic book characters Roger Slifer (writer) and Keith Giffen (artist) introduced Lobo in issue #3 of the comic series called “Omega Men”. This blue-skinned, cigar-smoking extraterrestrial possesses immense strength and healing abilities, often engaging in battles with both heroes and villains.

Initially, this character wasn’t particularly engaging. Lobo struggled to capture the attention of readers and writers alike during the 1980s, resulting in him being largely overlooked for most of that decade.

Actually, given that he appeared only a handful of times as a secondary character in the original Omega Men series, and primarily functioned as an antagonist without any significant ties to superhero teams, I’m somewhat skeptical about the validity or relevance of this assertion. It’s worth noting that his portrayal back then was more villainous than heroic, which makes me wonder if the quality of his character development improved over time.

In the 1990s, the character Lobo underwent a significant overhaul. Comic book author Alan Grant revised Lobo’s background, transforming him from a Velorpian to a Czarnian. Much like the initial tale, Lobo remains the sole survivor of his species. However, in this reimagining, Lobo was responsible for wiping out his own race, using a scorpion-like creature to kill off most of the other Czarnians. This revised origin has since been accepted as the definitive version and is expected to be portrayed in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

I’m curious if the film portrayal of Lobo will depict his actions as wrong, regardless of whether it follows a poor writer like King or not. If the screenplay stays true to the 90s premise but softens Lobo’s behavior, then morality in the story could be compromised.

To be honest, I’m growing tired of the constant stream of comic book adaptations in Hollywood, so another superhero movie doesn’t exactly excite me, especially when it comes to Lobo. Regardless of how they portray him in the film, the 90s concept just isn’t humorous to me, and I find it unfortunate that Jason Momoa finds such a character “great” if its foundation is based on distasteful notions.
