Gaiman unequivocally dismissed the allegations, stating that every one of his sexual encounters was consensual.
Here’s everything you need to learn about Gaiman’s statement.
Neil Gaiman releases statement denying sexual assault allegations
Neil Gaiman has clearly stated that he rejects accusations of sexual assault and misconduct, which have been raised by several individuals following a probe conducted by Tortoise Media and a feature published in New York Magazine. The women, some of whom were interviewed for the Tortoise podcast, assert that while some of their sexual encounters with Gaiman were consensual, there were instances where activities such as BDSM and rough sex took place without prior consent. Furthermore, one woman alleged that Gaiman coerced her into having sex in order to secure lodging on his property.
In response to allegations regarding non-consensual relationships, Gaiman clarified that all his sexual encounters were consensual. On his website, he wrote, “I’m far from perfect, but I have never partaken in any form of non-consensual sexual activity.” He acknowledged past personal errors, admitting to being emotionally detached and self-centered at times. However, he firmly denied any accusations of abusive behavior. He further stated, “I am ready to own up to any mistakes I’ve made. I refuse to distort the truth, and I cannot accept being misrepresented as someone I am not, nor can I admit to actions I didn’t perform.
The debate about Neil Gaiman has led to substantial impacts on his professional path. Following the accusations, several film adaptations of his stories have been postponed or halted. Among them are Dead Boy Detectives and the third installment of Good Omens. Although there’s no formal connection established between these actions and the allegations, it has been reported by Deadline that Gaiman distanced himself from Good Omens due to the circumstances.
