J. Anthony Crane talks Rudy Pankow’s return as JJ in Outer Banks Season 5
During a private conversation with TheDirect, actor J. Anthony Crane (Chandler Groff from Outer Banks) spoke about the rumors that Rudy Pankow might reprise his role as JJ Maybank in Season 5.
Crane acknowledged, “Yes, I understand your point. There seems to be some conjecture surrounding it, and indeed, fans have good reason to ponder due to its sudden conclusion.” Crane verified his participation in the upcoming season, yet remained noncommittal about the outcome for JJ.
In the final episode of Season 4, JJ obtained Blackbeard’s Blue Crown, only to encounter Groff who confessed he was JJ’s father. Groff fatally wounded JJ after a trade involving the Crown to save Kiara, causing fans to ponder if JJ might reappear through flashbacks or visions. To clarify this, Crane commented, “I believe they want to tell the story without being limited by the current timeline. If they find it necessary to do so, I’m confident that they will.
Crane outlined a possible way a JJ appearance could be integrated into the storyline, suggesting it might take place through a crucial memory or pivotal moment in the plot. “Perhaps there’s a scene where we require a memory, or something similar that conveys necessary information at that point in time. It’s fascinating to think about.” He emphasized that the final decision lies with the writers, stating, “I’m not involved in the decision-making process.
Previously, Jonas Pate, co-creator of Outer Banks, discussed the death of character JJ, describing it as a “moving finale” for his character’s storyline. He underscored that significant character deaths should carry significance, much like Ward Cameron’s demise in Season 3. Pate emphasized that JJ’s selfless act of sacrificing himself to save his friends was a crucial turning point and provided a fitting resolution to his tale.
Crane has stated that no details regarding Rudy Pankow’s return have been discussed with him yet. He added, “It would be nice,” which opens up possibilities about JJ’s role in shaping the storyline. Given that Chandler Groff, played by Crane, is the main adversary in Season 5, JJ’s demise could spark the Pogues to take revenge.
At the moment, you can stream seasons 1 through 4 of Outer Banks on Netflix. As for season 5, its release date hasn’t been announced yet.
