Andy Muschietti, the director of the 2023 film “The Flash,” has shared his thoughts on why this movie didn’t perform well at the box office. Originally intended as the final installment of DC’s Extended Universe (DCEU) before it underwent a reboot led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, “The Flash” was expected to be a success given its impressive cast. However, the movie turned out to be a significant flop, ranking among the biggest disappointments in superhero cinema history.
Andy Muschietti says his film flopped because ‘people just don’t care about the Flash’
In a recent interview on the La Baulera del Coso show by Radio Tu, director Andy Muschietti shared his thoughts about the underwhelming reception of The Flash.
On a colossal budget of $200 million, Muschietti stated that The Flash was considered a disappointment as it struggled to draw in various age groups and genders. He explained that the superhero film didn’t achieve success “for multiple reasons, primarily because it wasn’t a movie that resonated with all four demographic segments (adult males over 25, teenage males under 25, adult females over 25, and teenage females under 25). It fell short in this aspect.
The director added, “When we invest $200 million into a movie, our goal is to attract audiences including your grandmothers… In my personal discussions, it appears many people aren’t particularly interested in the Flash character. This seems to be especially true for female demographics. These sentiments seem to be working against the film, which I have come to understand.
Prior to its premiere, The Flash garnered significant excitement due to its impressive ensemble of actors. This star-studded cast featured Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, Ben Affleck in his last portrayal of Batman, Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman, and Sasha Calle making her debut as Supergirl. Additionally, the movie boasted unexpected appearances by stars like George Clooney, Nicolas Cage, among others. Unfortunately, despite these promising elements, The Flash failed to impress at the box office upon its release.
As a gamer putting on my movie critic hat, I’ve got to share some insights about The Flash, a flick that started off strong with over $55 million at the box office. However, during its theatrical journey, it could only muster up $271 million worldwide. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 63% on the Tomatometer, but it really shined on the Popcornmeter, receiving an 82% rating. Despite these ratings, it seemed to struggle in leaving a lasting impression on audiences.
