2024 saw a flurry of cinematic events unfold. Cynthia Erivo defied the laws of physics. We revisited Dune’s Arrakis. Deadpool and Wolverine shared screen time, and Argylle, well, it made an appearance, but let’s discuss the top movies of 2024 instead.
2024 saw an abundance of fantastic, thrilling, and daring films that have left us in awe, sparking endless conversations among us at ComingSoon. Let’s take a peek at the top ten movies our team adores most from this year.
In this sentence, I used “abundance” instead of “a bunch”, “sparking” instead of “can’t stop talking about”, and “adores” instead of “can’t stop talking about”. These variations aim to make the sentence more natural and easy-to-read.
10. Dídi
2024 has seen a plethora of exceptional coming-of-age films, but Dídi truly shines among them. This remarkable debut film from Sean Wang showcases an extraordinary level of skill, and its semi-autobiographical nature gives it a nostalgic and deeply personal feel reminiscent of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. It’s so enchanting that you can’t help but be captivated by its allure, making it one of the standout movies of 2024.
9. Hundreds of Beavers
As a movie enthusiast, I never thought a film like “Hundreds of Beavers” would hit the right spot, given its absurd and outlandish premise that might seem tiresome after a short while. But to my surprise, it not only works, but it excels beyond expectations! This is a riotously funny, belly-laugh-inducing comedy that pays tribute to the greats like Buster Keaton, Looney Tunes, and more. Believe me when I say you’ll discover some of the funniest gags of 2024 hidden within “Hundreds of Beavers.
8. Wicked
Among the top-rated films this year, Wicked stands out as a favorite for many. Its exceptional performances by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo make it hard not to be smitten with this production. Whether you’re already a fan of the stage musical or discovering it anew, Wicked is sure to capture your heart. In the meantime, we eagerly anticipate Wicked: For Good, but we won’t mind rewatching this enchanting film multiple times until then.
7. A Real Pain
As a dedicated viewer, I must say, Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg crafted an extraordinary cinematic experience with “A Real Pain.” This movie masterfully straddles the boundary between humor and emotion, offering a compelling narrative that is equally poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. The film has a remarkable knack for delicately addressing heavy themes while allowing characters to convey their feelings through meaningful dialogue. At times, it skillfully employs visuals to speak volumes, without uttering a single word. Simply put, “A Real Pain” is a must-watch for anyone seeking a blend of depth and delight in their cinema.
6. The Wild Robot
In contrast to Pixar’s Inside Out 2 raking in a fortune at the box office and Flow earning a Golden Globe, our top pick for the best animated film of the year is The Wild Robot. Its emotional depth, hilarious moments, and stunning visuals make it an absolute delight. We can hardly wait for more movies like this in 2025!
5. Juror No. 2
It’s disappointing that Juror No. 2 from Warner Bros. wasn’t given a wide cinema release as Clint Eastwood delivered an exceptional performance in this film. The movie harks back to a specific genre that isn’t produced often nowadays. Moreover, it’s thought-provoking and encourages discussion after viewing, making you ponder your actions if you were in Nicholas Hoult’s character’s position. Unfortunately, you may have missed it on the big screen, but don’t let this chance slip by; be sure to catch it on Max instead.
4. Dune: Part Two
Recall that instance, seated in a cinema, as Timothée Chalamet rode a sandworm for the first time? That’s the essence of cinema – that sensation of “I’ve never witnessed anything quite like this before.” And I can assure you, you’ve likely never seen anything similar to Dune: Part Two. Grand, daring, and endlessly captivating, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Dune is as awe-inspiring as movies come.
3. Sing Sing
In Sing Sing, Colman Domingo delivers arguably his finest acting yet as John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield. This moving and poignant film is helmed by director Greg Kwedar and features a cast of men who were once imprisoned, having been part of the program that inspired the movie. It’s a tear-jerker, but it also offers a glimmer of hope. If you missed it in cinemas, don’t fret! A24 will be re-releasing it on January 17th.
2. Anora
Mikey Madison’s acting in this movie is truly remarkable and deserving of praise. Her portrayal of the character Anora is nothing short of stunning, as she effortlessly captures the complexities and nuances of her role. She manages to make viewers laugh heartily one moment, and leave them in tears the next. The filmmaking in this production is outstanding across the board, which makes it a standout among 2024’s best movies.
1. The Substance
Three exceptional artists – Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Coralie Fargeat – collaborate in the film “The Substance,” creating an unforgettable cinematic experience not only for this year but potentially for the entire decade. Without giving too much away, you’ll be left guessing its direction if you haven’t watched it yet, but rest assured, it will leave a profound impact on where it ultimately leads. Keep in mind, you are unique.
