Game Changer movie review: Ram Charan starrer political actioner falls flat in a cliched narrative with no change in Shankar

At last, following a prolonged anticipation, the political action film “Game Changer,” featuring Ram Charan, will hit theaters on January 10, 2025. This movie, directed by Shankar, represents his initial partnership with the RRR actor and his first foray into a direct Telugu production.

As I step into the role of a father on-screen alongside this captivating film, Kiara Advani and Anjali gracefully assume their lead roles, while an impressive ensemble of actors like SJ Suryah, Srikanth, Samuthirakani, and others join the cast. If you’re considering catching the movie in theaters this week, be sure to read the TopMob review first for a well-rounded perspective!

The Plot

In the film “Game Changer,” I find myself immersed in the tale of Ram Nandhan IAS, a diligent public servant who’s known for his strict professionalism and unwavering dedication to rooting out corruption within the political landscape. Driven by my commitment to establish a fair and honest system, I often find myself at odds with a powerful politician, leading to an intense battle between us.

In addition to the narrative about cleaning up the political system from corruption, there’s also a deeper tale woven throughout the story – that of Officer Ram’s father, Appanna, who yearned for a nation untouched by corruption. The movie primarily revolves around whether Ram can accomplish his mission, driven by his father’s aspirations.

The Good

Discussing what made Game Changer successful, it was primarily due to Ram Charan’s impressive portrayal as the lead actor, breathing life into a film that might have otherwise been dull. The performances delivered by the RRR actor, particularly his embodiment of the character Appanna, were truly noteworthy and deserving of praise.

As a dedicated follower, I found that while the movie’s narration was somewhat influenced by its screenplay perspective, it still had several high points that pleased Ram Charan fans. The actor’s attitude and grace, paired with his natural swagger, perfectly complemented the antagonist characters portrayed by SJ Suryah and Srikanth.

Specifically, the flashback scenes in the film are particularly captivating, imbuing it with emotional depth that stands out in an otherwise lackluster narrative. Upon further examination, the film “Game Changer” boasts impressive production values, creating a visually stunning and breathtaking experience for viewers.

The film’s extensive production techniques, skillfully combined with Tirru’s exceptional cinematography, create scenes that are visually delightful for audiences. This is evident in the musical aspect of the movie, where the songs “Jaragandi” and “Dhop” stand out as particular highlights.

Just as the visuals in the songs are worthy of praise, so too is the skill with which Thaman S has created fresh and captivating tracks. His ability to compose compelling background scores, showcasing his expertise, should also be celebrated.

The Bad

game Changer is undeniably known for its excessive repetition in narrative, making it feel overly familiar or even tiresome to many viewers. Some might question if this was the creative decision of Karthik Subbaraj, a director renowned for films such as Jigarthanda, DoubleX and Maahan.

The movie’s plot was formulaic and overused, relying on tired storylines and outdated narrative devices that have lost their charm over time. Additionally, it seemed to imitate the director’s past works from his heyday, resulting in a less impressive final product.

In a more pleasant rephrasing, here’s my take: The over-the-top, stereotypical characters, constant emphasis on emotional family moments, and lingering taste of such themes, give the film a monotonous feel that makes it difficult to engage with and watch.

As the second part becomes slightly more tolerable than the first due to an unexpected turn in the mid-section, it still feels like scraping the bottom of the barrel. The forced humor and dubious shift in the storyline’s direction once again make this film a disappointing effort by director Shankar.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: Even with the boundless creativity and the capacity to craft epic stories that captivate audiences, some films can be hard to swallow due to shifting tastes and expectations among viewers today.

The Performance

In this movie, Ram Charan carries the entire production on his strong acting abilities and charisma. His depiction of the character Appanna and the depth he brings to the role make it one of his standout performances. Unfortunately, the character seems underutilized within the overall plotline.

On one side, both SJ Suryah and Srikanth delivered impressive performances as the villains, but unfortunately, Kiara Advani was confined to overused romantic stereotypes, serving only to fill out the scene. However, Anjali’s character, being Appanna’s wife, was more developed and intriguing.

The Verdict

Without a doubt, Game Changer is among the most anticipated films of this year, but unfortunately, it hasn’t lived up to the high expectations set for it. Despite director Shankar’s reputation for addressing societal issues in his movies, Game Changer seems to be rooted in the filmmaking style of the 1990s Indian cinema.

The movie, with its entertaining content and featuring Ram Charan at his best, is sure to please anyone looking for an enjoyable watch.
