Alex Kemp’s ski accident explained
19-year-old Alex Kemp, a freshman at Williams College, tragically passed away on January 7, 2025, following a skiing incident at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Massachusetts. Originating from Lincroft, New Jersey, Kemp met with misfortune while descending the challenging Cutter Trail, which is categorized as an advanced black diamond slope.
On January 6, at precisely 2:39 p.m., a witness placed a call to the emergency services from Berkshire County. This individual reported that Kemp had crashed over an embankment and sustained critical head injuries.
At Jiminy Peak Ski Resort, emergency responders from the ski patrol and Northern Berkshire Emergency Medical Services performed lifesaving actions and transported Kemp to Berkshire Medical Center. Subsequently, he was moved to Baystate Medical Center, where unfortunately, he passed away due to his injuries. As reported by CBS News, the Massachusetts State Police and Berkshire State Police Detective Unit are leading the investigation into this incident. It has been confirmed that Kemp was wearing a helmet at the time of the event, and there is no indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to it.
At Williams College, Kemp was part of both the cross-country and track teams. He had been selected to join from Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey prior. His areas of academic interest spanned computer science, political science, and economics. The faculty at Williams College appreciated him as a diligent and exceptionally skilled student.
On December 31, 2024, a tragic skiing accident at Cranmore Mountain in Conway, New Hampshire, resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy, marking the second such fatality in New England within a month. The officials at Jiminy Peak have been working with investigators and have offered their sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased.
Maud Mandel, the president of Williams College, recognized the passing of Kemp and extended her condolences to the community. The college provides on-campus support resources and intends to hold a public event as a tribute to his life.
