Lionsgate is thinking about asking Donnie Yen to take on the director’s role for the John Wick spin-off film, focusing on his character, Caine.
In May 2024, it was revealed that a standalone movie for the character Caine, who first appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 (released in 2023), is in development. Actor Yen will continue to portray this character, and the plot will focus on Caine’s life post-release from his duties to the High Table.
The film is being written by Robert Askins, while a director has not yet been officially announced.
During a conversation with Steve Weintraub from Collider, Yen was questioned about rumors suggesting his possible involvement as director for the spin-off film.

Yen replied, “I believe both fans and the studio are hoping for this, and we’ll have to wait and see. Frankly, Steve, all I can say is that discussions are ongoing, and they’re quite in-depth. The future remains uncertain, but I feel a sense of duty and pressure not to tarnish the franchise. I strive to create something new for the series while keeping fan expectations high.
Previously, Yen has been the director for films like Legend of the Wolf (1997), Ballistic Kiss (1998), Shanghai Affairs (1998), Sakra (2023) and The Prosecutor (2024). He also collaborated with Wong Chun-chun in co-directing Protégé de la Rose Noire (2004).
Speaking about the initial announcement of the Caine spin-off film, Yen expressed, “Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an exceptional journey. The reason these films strike such a deep chord is that Chad, Basil, Erica, and I strive to create action sequences, fights, and stunts that are not just exciting, original, and artistic, but also reflect character development, storyline, and emotion. Caine is an intriguing character with a tormented past, and I’m thrilled to reprise the role.
The Caine spin-off movie does not have a release date at this time.
