28 Years Later: Danny Boyle Will Direct Third Movie, Cillian Murphy’s Involvement Clarified

Danny Boyle plans to direct the third movie in the new 28 Years Later trilogy.

28 Years After, a follow-up to the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, is set to hit theaters in June 2025. This movie, like its predecessors, will be under the direction of Boyle. The cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and additional stars.

28 Years Later serves as the beginning of a fresh trilogy in cinema. Its successor, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” is currently being directed by Nia DaCosta, an accomplished filmmaker known for her works such as Little Woods (2018), Candyman (2021), and The Marvels (2023).

As reported by Empire Magazine, director Boyle intends to resume duties for the third installment of the trilogy – yet to be named – but filming on this project will not commence until the 2025 release of “28 Years Later”.

What is Cillian Murphy’s involvement with 28 Years Later?

When the trailer for the movie “28 Years Later” came out, viewers thought they saw Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, among the infected. However, it was discovered later on that it wasn’t actually Murphy, but rather another character portrayed by Angus Neill.

Back in 2024, I got excited when I heard the news: Murphy is not just involved, but executive producing the long-awaited sequel, “28 Years Later.” Intriguingly, Sony Motion Pictures Group’s Tom Rothman hinted to Deadline that Murphy will make a comeback in an unexpected manner for this upcoming film.

Currently, producer Andrew Macdonald has shared with Empire Magazine that the character portrayed by Murphy will not feature in Boyle’s 2025 film.

McDonald mentioned that both they and he desired his participation. However, he wasn’t part of the initial movie. Yet, there’s anticipation for his presence somewhere down the line, perhaps as Jim. Currently, he’s an executive producer, and it’s hoped that future collaborations can be established within the trilogy.

2025 sees the U.S. release of “28 Years Later” in cinemas, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. Following closely is Nia DaCosta’s “The Bone Temple,” slated for a January 16, 2026 premiere.
