2024 saw rumors swirling that Austin Butler might take on the character Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s revamped version of American Psycho. This stirred a wave of excitement since Christian Bale had previously brought this role to life in the 2000 film adaption. Yet, Bret Easton Ellis, who penned the original 1991 novel, expressed doubts in a recent interview, claiming these rumors could be misleading or unfounded.
Bret Easton Ellis says Austin Butler isn’t the new American Psycho yet
In a recent conversation on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Ellis expressed doubt about the authenticity of the American Psycho reboot news starring Austin Butler. According to him, he was informed by a source that many of the individuals said to be associated with the project have not yet sealed their contracts.
Ellis mentioned that he’d heard rumors stating there are no agreements in place: Austin Butler allegedly hasn’t finalized his contract to portray Patrick Bateman; Luca isn’t confirmed yet; and Scott Burns, who is slated to write the script, doesn’t have a deal either.
As a game-loving individual, I’d rephrase it like this: “I drew information from multiple resources to understand how people might respond when faced with misleading news.
Ellis clarified that he had no role in the project, even if it existed. He added, “I’m completely detached from it. I may receive some funds if they proceed, but I have zero creative input, and that’s all I can say on the matter.
Discussions about Luca Guadagnino’s version of American Psycho have been circulating for some time before it was officially announced that Butler would portray Patrick Bateman. The film is said to be in production at Lionsgate, who also distributed the 2000 movie starring Bale. Notably, this original adaptation was helmed by Mary Harron from a screenplay she co-wrote with Guinevere Turner. Besides Bale, the cast included Justin Theroux as Timothy Bryce, Josh Lucas as Craig McDermott, Jared Leto as Paul Allen, and Willem Dafoe as Donald Kimball, among others.
