It’s expected that the improved Steam Deck will be extremely popular, following the significant sales success of its OLED update last year. Nevertheless, a developer associated with the device has recently refuted speculations about an imminent AMD Z2 version of the Valve handheld, suggesting that no new upgrade is currently planned.
Valve shuts down Steam Deck upgrade
AMD’s latest showcase unveiled the Ryzen Z2-series APUs, which are tailor-made for enhanced handheld gaming PCs such as the upgraded ROG Ally or a new Lenovo Legion Go. During this presentation, an illustration of Valve’s Steam Deck was displayed, leading some to speculate about a potential upgrade to the portable device.
As a devoted fan, I’m excited about the Steam Deck’s current custom AMD APU, codenamed “Van Gogh,” built on Zen 2 architecture. Switching to a more standard chip in the next model might feel odd, given that we’re accustomed to this uniquely optimized APU. However, the new Ryzen Z2 chips are undeniably powerful, yet it seems Valve hasn’t felt compelled to upgrade just yet due to their impressive performance.
As an enthusiastic supporter, I’d like to clarify a recent buzz: Pierre-Loup Griffais, the Steam Deck developer at Valve, swiftly put to rest any whispers about a Z2-powered variant of the Steam Deck.
The developer clarified to fans that there won’t be a Z2 Steam Deck. It seems the slide was intended to imply that the series is designed for devices similar to the Steam Deck, rather than announcing a specific product.
Previously, Valve stated that it’s likely several years before we see a true successor to the Steam Deck. Since they’re anticipating a significant jump in power from the next generation, gamers may need to make do with the somewhat less potent, yet remarkable, device for some time.
As the anticipated release of Nintendo Switch 2 approaches, there’s a strong possibility that the portable gaming market will significantly advance in terms of quality. Given Valve’s meticulous nature, it’s unlikely they would settle for anything less powerful for their upcoming handheld device compared to a console.
