UConn standout Paige Bueckers experienced a worrisome injury during the Huskies’ commanding 83-52 win over Villanova on Sunday. The incident unfolded towards the end of the third quarter as Bueckers pursued a loose ball, unfortunately colliding with Villanova’s Jasmine Bascoe. As Bascoe dived for the ball, her momentum carried her into Bueckers’ leg, causing it to bend awkwardly. Following the collision, Bueckers remained on the court for a short while, clearly in pain. She managed to hobble off the court and head to the locker room, but she did not re-enter the game.
Despite the concerning incident, UConn coach Geno Auriemma expressed optimism about Paige Bueckers’ condition following the game. Auriemma explained, “She’s doing well. To be honest, the player dove for the ball and you probably saw it. Paige turned her back in a strange position. It’s odd because we had someone at the scorer’s table ready to substitute. But she’ll recover. She appears well. I’m hopeful; let me put it that way.” (CBS Sports)
Bueckers, who ended up with 15 points, 9 assists, and 3 rebounds, has had past knee issues, like a torn ACL in 2022 which kept her out for an entire year. This recent issue also involves the same knee, so the team is taking a careful approach. If Bueckers does have to sit out some games, it might be detrimental for UConn. Thankfully, their schedule isn’t very demanding until they take on Tennessee, ranked No. 10, on February 6.
