Simon Jones, speaking on behalf of The Vivienne, announced via an Instagram post on January 5th that the drag artist, known as James, had passed away over the weekend. “James was a deeply cherished, compassionate, and extraordinary individual,” the statement says in part. “Their family are devastated by the loss of their child, sibling, and relative. They take immense pride in the remarkable accomplishments James made during their life and career.

A spokesperson shared that they wouldn’t disclose any specifics concerning The Vivienne’s passing or the circumstances surrounding it. Additionally, they asked for space and privacy during this difficult time as the family copes with their loss. Meanwhile, Jones has acknowledged The Vivienne’s artistic talents in a separate statement, highlighting the artist’s continuous growth and dedication to art.

Jones expressed in his note, “Viv made me laugh more than anyone else throughout my life. Their humor and sharp intellect were unique and exceptional. I feel privileged and grateful that Viv played such a significant role in my daily life for the past five years.”

He also shared his sadness about the fact that Viv’s career was just taking off, stating, “In musical theatre, Viv found a place where they felt passion, excelled, and flourished. I am deeply saddened and devastated by this news.

For those unfamiliar, The Vivienne gained popularity after being appointed as the UK drag representative for RuPaul’s Drag Race US in 2015. Subsequently, they emerged victorious in the inaugural UK edition of the show in 2019 with a captivating performance of Wham’s “I’m Your Man” during the finale.

Afterward, The Vivienne took part in the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars in the year 2022. Moreover, The Vivienne was the first drag performer to join Dancing on Ice in 2023. In the end, Season 15 of this show saw The Vivienne finishing in third position.
