As a seasoned gamer who grew up in the ’80s, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and curiosity upon hearing about the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie. I remember staying up late on weeknights to catch the original animated series, enraptured by the epic battles between He-Man and Skeletor.
However, Nicholas Galitzine‘s words about the film being “quite different” from the original animation pique my interest. As a fan of adaptations that breathe fresh life into classic properties, I find myself eager to see how they will reimagine the world of Eternia for a modern audience.
The casting choices also intrigue me. Idris Elba as Duncan, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Jared Leto as Skeletor are all talented actors who have proven their abilities in various genres. I’m excited to see how they bring these iconic characters to life.
One thing that gives me pause is the release date being set for 2026. That seems like a long wait, even for someone accustomed to waiting for highly anticipated games and movies. But hey, as a gamer who’s waited years for new entries in some of my favorite franchises, I guess I can handle it!
On a lighter note, I wonder if they’ll include the classic “I have the power” catchphrase. If they do, maybe they could update it to something like “I have the controller,” just for a little gamer nod. That would make this old-school gamer smile!
According to Nicholas Galitzine, the upcoming live-action He-Man film will not resemble the classic He-Man and Masters of the Universe animated show as it was originally known.
Last year, it was officially confirmed that Travis Knight would helm a live-action Masters of the Universe movie for Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel. In May 2024, it became public knowledge that Galitzine, recognized for his roles in Red, White & Royal Blue (2023) and The Idea of You (2024), had been selected to portray He-Man in the film.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, they inquired whether Galitzine had started his preparations for the character by watching any episodes from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series.
What did Nicholas Galitzine say about He-Man and Masters of the Universe?
He replied affirmatively, ‘I do.’ What I want to share is that our interpretation deviates significantly from the initial animation, which was undeniably camp and successful in its time. However, there have been several adaptations since the release of the Revelation version of Master of the Universe, and the comics themselves. We’re treating our script as a sort of guiding principle, or ‘Bible.’ It’s fascinating to learn about the impact this show had on many people. It was a formative experience for many, so it’s thrilling to work on something that will evoke nostalgia while also attracting new fans.
In addition to Galitzine, the cast for Knight’s Masters of Universe film includes Alison Brie portraying Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba taking on the role of Duncan, Jared Leto embodying Skeletor, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson bringing Goat Man to life, and Kojo Attah playing Tri-Klops.
As an eager fan, I can’t wait to uncover the intriguing plot details that are being kept secret for now. Luckily, the highly anticipated “Masters of the Universe” is set to hit U.S. screens on June 5, 2026!
