As a long-time fan of animated movies and a frequent moviegoer, it is always exciting to witness the box office successes of beloved franchises and new releases alike. This New Year’s Day was no exception, as I found myself caught between two titans – Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 blockbuster, continued its impressive run with an additional $10.3 million on New Year’s Day, bringing its domestic total to $138.5 million. With its worldwide haul estimated at around $342.5 million, it has already surpassed its reported budget of $200 million. However, it still has a ways to go to beat the record-breaking global success of its predecessor, which ended its run with an astonishing $1.657 billion.

On the other hand, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came in second place on New Year’s Day with $8.95 million. With a domestic total of $138.5 million (worldwide is estimated to be around $210.6 million), this speedy blue hedgehog could potentially become the highest-grossing Sonic movie to date if it surpasses Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s $405.4 million.

In terms of other releases, Moana 2, Nosferatu, and A24’s Nosferatu made respectable showings, while the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and the comedy Babygirl also found their audience.

As I reflect on this cinematic battle between Mufasa and Sonic, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony of a lion and a hedgehog duking it out for box office supremacy. It seems that even in the world of entertainment, the circle of life continues!

On New Year’s Day alone, The Lion King prequel, titled Mufasa, earned an extra $10.3 million. In the United States, this brings its total box office earnings to $138.5 million. Globally, it is speculated that the film has accumulated approximately $342.5 million in revenue.

Although it’s currently exceeding its initial $200 million budget, Mufasa is not yet close to surpassing the global box office earnings of 2019’s The Lion King, which raked in approximately $1.657 billion at the end of its run.

On New Year’s Day, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ranked second in box office earnings with approximately $8.95 million, according to Deadline. As its domestic total now stands at around $138.5 million (projected global earnings are about $210.6 million), if it manages to outperform Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s $405.4 million, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 could become the most successful Sonic movie ever made.

In other locations, Moana 2 accumulated an additional $5.1 million, Nosferatu from A24 earned $4.96 million, and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown took in $3.1 million.
