As a die-hard horror fan who has been following Bill Skarsgård’s career since his early days in Swedish cinema, I can confidently say that his return to the role of Pennywise in “It: Welcome to Derry” is a dream come true! Having grown up on Stephen King’s books and the original “It” miniseries, I was thrilled when Skarsgård brought new life to my beloved Pennywise in Andy Muschietti’s films.
Now, with the series premiering on HBO in 2025, I can hardly contain my excitement! Skarsgård’s words that it will be “pretty hardcore” have me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the chilling encounters with our beloved clown.

Bill Skarsgård, currently starring as Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, previously portrayed Pennywise the Clown in Andy Muschietti’s films IT (2017) and IT Chapter Two (2019).
In 2025, he’ll once again take on his iconic character in “It: Welcome to Derry”, a new TV series airing on HBO. This series has been developed by the talented trio of Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Skarsgård shared that the upcoming series is likely to be just as terrifying, if not more so, compared to the It films when he talked with Josh Horowitz.
“It’s pretty hardcore, man,” he said.

Responding to being asked if he had any reservations about reprising his role as Pennywise, Skarsgård explained, “I felt like I’d played my part, in a sense. Additionally, I was working on Nosferatu and portraying Orlock at the time, which made me think, ‘This might be the end of my monster roles.’ Jokingly, I meant that phrase. Honestly, I did feel a bit tired of it and yearned for new challenges. Furthermore, Pennywise has become such a significant part of my career that I felt somewhat typecast by it. I thought, ‘That’s the 26-year-old me.’ I’m not just a young man anymore.
After a shift, things have evolved. The Muschiettis, Barbara and Andy, are taking on this venture now. They’re truly special to me, not just friends but more like family. In fact, I’m the godfather of Andy’s son. So, with such a strong bond, I felt it was right to bring him back into our lives again.
Skarsgård added, “It was an enjoyable experience, even better than I anticipated! We got to delve into aspects of Pennywise that we hadn’t previously, which is exciting. Working with Andy was a blast as always, and I believe there are some intriguing elements yet to be revealed that audiences will appreciate.
