As a cinephile who has traversed the diverse landscapes of Indian cinema for years, I find myself intrigued by this spirited exchange between Naga Vamsi and Boney Kapoor. While I respect both producers for their significant contributions to the industry, I must admit that I lean towards Vamsi’s perspective in this instance.
Having witnessed the meteoric rise of South Indian cinema on a global scale, I can’t help but marvel at the transformative power these films have had on the way Bollywood perceives cinema. The success stories of Baahubali, RRR, and now Animal and Jawan are testament to this shift.
However, I must also acknowledge that Boney Kapoor’s comments about Mughal-E-Azam being a timeless classic are unquestionable. Yet, the fact that he didn’t mention any recent Hindi film between Baahubali and Mughal-E-Azam does raise an eyebrow.
In jest, I can’t help but wonder if this was an oversight or a subtle hint at the current state of Bollywood’s mass entertainers compared to their Southern counterparts. After all, just as Allu Arjun might have been referring to language barriers, perhaps Boney Kapoor was hinting at the stylistic ones!
In a recent discussion hosted by Galatta Plus, film producers such as Naga Vamsi, Boney Kapoor, Archana Kalpathi, and others participated in a roundtable interview. During the conversation, the well-known producer of films including Guntur Kaaram, Lucky Baskhar, and Devara, Naga Vamsi, expressed his opinion that Bollywood predominantly produces movies for upscale neighborhoods. This statement initiated a discussion with Boney Kapoor.
In his remark, the producer expressed, “It could come across as quite blunt. However, it’s important to note that South Indians have significantly influenced Bollywood’s perspective on filmmaking. Unfortunately, Bollywood has been focused on producing films for Bandra and Juhu. The shift you’ve seen with Baahubali, RRR, Animal, and Jawan is a testament to this change.
Moreover, Vamsi noted that Boney Kapoor directly referred to Baahubali and RRR following the iconic film Mughal-E-Azam, implying that no Hindi film was mentioned between these two instances.
When Producer Vamsi commented on Boney Kapoor’s observations about how South films have influenced the foreign box office over time, it ignited a discussion between them. This exchange prompted a response from the well-known Bollywood director, Boney Kapoor.
In response, Boney Kapoor stated, “It’s not feasible to discuss every piece of information we possess in this setting. Instead, we should focus on discussing topics more broadly. When I bring up Mughal-E-Azam, Baahubali, and other such films, it doesn’t mean that I’ve overlooked other movies. It’s not a reflection of Telugu cinema’s influence. I don’t hold that belief.
Vamsi made it clear that he meant movies with broad appeal when he spoke about films, but Boney Kapoor maintained his stance that such mass-appeal films have long been part of Bollywood. The producer added, “The lead actor of Pushpa 2 declared himself an ardent fan of Amitabh Bachchan; he might as well have expressed his admiration for NT Rama Rao.
In response, Naga Vamsi acknowledged his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan and mentioned Allu Arjun’s fondness for Chiranjeevi. The producer explained that when Arjun spoke about Amitabh Bachchan, he was emphasizing the idea that language is no longer a hindrance in cinema.
Naga Vamsi highlighted that the main difference in movies isn’t based on language, but rather on whether they are good or poor productions. Regardless of whether it’s Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, or Bengali cinema, what truly matters is the ability for viewers to connect with the content, indicating a change in audience tastes.
Archana Kalpathi, the producer, voiced her backing for Vamsi by highlighting that despite being an original Malayalam film, Manjummel Boys had achieved blockbuster status in Tamil Nadu.
