As a dedicated fan of Western films and Kevin Costner’s exceptional acting, I can’t help but feel both elated and perplexed at the sudden availability of “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapter 1 on Netflix. Growing up in the golden age of VHS tapes, I fondly remember renting Costner’s iconic Western films like “Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range,” which have left an indelible mark on my cinematic taste buds.
The news about the film’s release feels like a personal Christmas come early! Yet, being well-versed in the industry, I can’t help but wonder why it was initially slated for Max exclusive and now found its way to Netflix. Regardless of the behind-the-scenes drama, I’m just grateful that I can now binge on this epic tale without having to wait for DVD releases or scouring the wilds of torrent sites!
Now, if only they could do something about that unfortunate box office performance… Perhaps if they release Chapter 1 and 2 together, it might help boost its chances at the ticket counter! (Knock on wood, I’m no Hollywood prognosticator, but I’d bet my cowboy boots on that one!)
It’s unexpected but exciting: You can now stream the first chapter of Kevin Costner’s series, “Horizon: An American Saga,” on Netflix.
The movie titled ‘The Western’ that was initially set for release in June 2024 is now available for viewing. This unexpected announcement contradicts earlier speculations suggesting the film would only be accessible on Max. However, it appears these reports were inaccurate as the film seems no longer bound to that platform.
Initially, Kevin Costner’s first installment of the intended series received a blend of positive and negative feedback upon release and managed to earn only $38 million globally, despite a production budget of $50 million. Due to its underperformance, New Line Cinema decided to postpone the sequel—already filmed concurrently with the first chapter—from its original August 2024 premiere date. Though it hasn’t hit theaters yet, the film did make an appearance at the Venice Film Festival in September of 2024.
What do we know about the Horizon: An American Saga sequels?
The American series “Horizon: An American Saga,” originally conceived by Costner as a four-part Western epic, is yet to fully unfold, with the release of Chapters 3 and 4 still uncertain. Yet, Costner remains dedicated to bringing these films to life in some shape or fashion. In an interview with Deadline, he expressed his intention to produce the movies in one form or another.
I’m not sure how I’ll manage it, but I plan on completing Chapter 3 first, followed by Chapter 4. If you’d like to mark that as the end, then that will be the end.
Horizon: An America Saga spans a 15-year duration during the American Civil War. As of now, specific plot points are being kept secret; however, Deadline hints that this epic will involve Kevin Costner facing off against harsh natural environments and engaging with Native American communities impacted by the westward expansion of the United States.
In addition to playing a key role in the production, Kevin Costner appears on-screen in Horizon: An America Saga, alongside stars like Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower. Costner is also recognized as a producer for this project, alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard.
