Do Cho Sang-woo & Sae-byeok Return in Squid Game Season 2?

As a diehard fan who has lived and breathed Squid Game since its debut, I must say, it feels like a gut punch to learn that Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) and Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) won’t be returning for Season 2. Their characters quickly became the hearts of the series, and their tragic ends left us yearning for more.

There’s much excitement among viewers about whether Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) and Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) will make an appearance in Squid Game Season 2. These characters, who stole the show in season 1 by participating in the lethal games, are cherished by fans. Unfortunately, their stories ended on a sorrowful note, which might seem to rule out their return. However, with the creators known for their innovative storytelling, many are wondering if they’ve found a clever way to bring these beloved characters back for this upcoming season. Here’s what we know so far.

Are Park Hae-soo’s Cho Sang-woo and Jung Ho-yeon’s Sae-byeok in Squid Game Season 2?

In the second season of Squid Game, neither Cho Sang-woo nor Sae-byeok make a reappearance because they perished during the incidents of the initial series. Nevertheless, they momentarily show up in a dream sequence featuring Gi-hun.

In the opening episode of Season 2, entitled “Bread and Lottery,” our central character, Gi-hun, is back, this time with a vengeance against the Front Man, determined to put an end to the ruthless games he finds himself in once again. The episode underscores the grim nature of the contest by providing brief glimpses into the lives of two beloved characters from last season: Cho Sang-woo and Sae-byeok, who both reached the final round previously.

In a chilling dream sequence, Gi-hun awakens, finding The Front Man gripping the decapitated heads of Cho Sang-woo and Kang Sae-byeok. This harrowing vision leaves Gi-hun shaken and distressed. It symbolizes the emotional trauma inflicted by the games, where participants were forced to compete against one another. Though they only appear in this dream, neither Sang-woo nor Sae-byeok reappear in Season 2, as their characters remain dead.

In Season 1, both characters face an unfortunate conclusion. Only Gi-hun manages to make it through the games and is declared the victor. However, Sae-byeok’s fate takes a tragic turn during the glass bridge game when she becomes critically injured. Later, Sang-woo, acting with malice, stabs her in the neck, leading to her death. This ruthless act was carried out deliberately by Sang-woo to stop Gi-hun from leaving the games to save Sae-byeok.

In the end, Sang-woo and Gi-hun stand against each other, with one protecting and the other attacking. Tragically, Sang-woo decides to end his life, leaving Gi-hun as the winner of the grueling competition.
