Robert Eggers Reveals ‘Demented’ Final Moment of Nosferatu Was Cut

As a die-hard fan of Robert Eggers‘ dark and gripping cinematic universe, I must admit that the behind-the-scenes tidbits of his latest masterpiece, “Nosferatu,” only deepens my admiration for the man and his work. The fact that he was willing to delve into such a demented and macabre scene, only to ultimately decide it was too comical, speaks volumes about his dedication to creating an unsettling, atmospheric experience.

In his latest interview, filmmaker Robert Eggers shared an intriguing detail about a scene he had to omit from the conclusion of “Nosferatu”. He explained that the sequence was simply too “disturbingly bizarre” or “extremely weird” for the movie.

What did Robert Eggers have to cut from Nosferatu?

In conversation with Variety about the theater-released adaptation, Eggers discussed the film’s conclusion, which significantly diverges from the original. Instead of being consumed by the sun as in the source material, the movie concludes with Lily Rose-Depp’s character, Ellen Hutter, and Count Orlok locked in an affectionate clasp.

As per Eggers, Orlok appears to bleed from multiple parts of his body in the movie, but what stood out as unusual at first was him bleeding from his rear end. However, Eggers later found that depicting this made Orlok seem too comical, so they ended up sealing it off physically.

Eggers pointed out a detail in the shot: Orlok appeared to be oozing blood from his eyes, ears, and nose. Additionally, there were openings suggesting maggots in his back. To make things more gruesome, we prepared for him to bleed from his anus as well, but it turned out quite comical. So, during filming, we needed to plug that up with a cork.

Nosferatu, the movie, is a modern retelling of a 1922 film with the same name, which wasn’t approved by Bram Stoker but was inspired by his famous novel Dracula from 1897. This new version is created by Eggers, who has previously directed The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Northman (2022).

The film also features Nicholas Hoult playing Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp portraying Ellen Hutter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the role of Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Hanna Harding, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, and Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, alongside Skarsgård.

The synopsis for Robert Eggers’ film, Nosferatu, describes a chilling story where a young woman finds herself obsessed with a haunting vampire who is equally enamored with her. This unnatural affection results in a trail of terror and dread.
