As a long-time movie and TV buff who’s seen more therapy sessions than I care to count in real life, let me tell you that “Shrinking” on Apple TV is an absolute gem. It’s like a wild, hilarious ride through the mind of a therapist’s office, where the dialogue is so unrealistic it feels almost too good to be true. But trust me, this show will keep you hooked for every minute of its two seasons.
In a unique, humorous, and occasionally eccentric manner, the Apple TV show “Shrinking” stands out. Conversations in everyday life may not mirror this style, yet the captivating quality of such dialogue ensures you won’t look away for even a moment during each episode of this engaging series.
The television series Shrinking introduces Harrison Ford in his debut TV role as Dr. Paul Rhoades, a character reminiscent of his talk show persona: reserved yet witty, sometimes brooding, and occasionally sarcastic. He practices therapy in Pasadena, California, where he works alongside Jimmy Laird (portrayed by Jason Segel) and Gaby (played by Jessica Williams), both fellow therapists in the same office complex. The series, spanning two seasons with the finale of season 2 (episode #12) now available on Apple TV, revolves around these doctors juggling numerous patients and their personal issues, offering a humorous and engaging exploration of mental health.
Sadly, during this series, Jimmy experienced the tragic loss of his wife in a car accident, and Paul was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. His daughter Alice frequently clashes with Jimmy, some disputes stemming directly from his wife’s untimely death in the accident. Meanwhile, there are recurring tiffs between Jimmy and his neighbors Liz (portrayed by Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley), which often bring a dose of humor amidst the serious challenges they all face.
The standout aspect of this series lies in Luke Tennie’s portrayal of the character Sean, who grapples with numerous psychological issues stemming from his war experiences in Afghanistan. These struggles manifest themselves through aggressive outbursts and confrontations. At first, Sean tolerates Jimmy and their bond flourishes throughout multiple therapy sessions they share together, eventually leading to Sean residing in Jimmy’s guesthouse. However, Jimmy’s father Paul disapproves of this friendship due to ethical concerns regarding doctor-patient relationships, causing him to take control of Sean’s treatment sessions.
In addition to Jimmy, other notable characters in this show are Brian (portrayed by Michael Urie) and Louis (played by Brett Goldstein). Brian is a gay character who occasionally acts as Jimmy’s lawyer and often adds humor to the series. As for Louis, he was the drunk driver responsible for Jimmy’s wife’s death, but over time, he develops a friendship with Jimmy and his daughter Alice, despite the traumatic circumstances that initially brought them together.
Based on my observations of shows available on Apple TV, this series stands out as the most engaging and enjoyable.
I’m thoroughly enjoying and strongly endorse the show “Shrinking” – its Rotten Tomatoes reviews, a whopping 97%, certainly echo my sentiments!
