James Gunn Spoke With Zack Snyder About Superman’s Red Trunks

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon learning about James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. The red trunks are making a comeback, and that alone has me reminiscing about the classic Superman days of yore.

In James Gunn’s forthcoming “Superman” movie, the iconic character will sport his traditional red briefs, a decision that the DC Studios co-head debated over and even sought advice from another Superman director on.

What did James Gunn and Zack Snyder talk about?

During a recent question-and-answer session following the unveiling of the Superman preview, director James Gunn discussed the creation of the costume, with contributions from both star David Corenswet and costume designer Juliana Makovsky.

Gunn expressed that in many aspects, Superman can be considered an outsider because he’s actually an alien from another planet. He shared this backstory during the development of the Superman costume, working alongside David Corenswet and Juliana, our costume designer.

In deciding if Superman would don the red briefs, Gunn consulted multiple individuals, among them Zack Snyder, who oversaw the productions of Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017). It’s worth mentioning that Snyder’s version of Superman did not sport any briefs.

In our discussions, we kept debating over the red trunks, as Gunn mentioned. I even spoke to Zack Snyder regarding this matter. He explained that he experimented with countless variations of the trunks but couldn’t quite make it work. I could see why that might be challenging.

Eventually, Gunn explained that a discussion with Corenswet led him to decide on incorporating the trunks, serving as an homage to how Superman might encourage kids to view him as non-threatening.

Originally, I intended to utilize the trunks, but for some reason, I found myself repeatedly removing them. Upon entering, I was struck by its vibrant appearance; the trunks were in place, and I felt a mix of confusion and awe, thinking something along the lines of “Wow, this is so colorful. David, what do you think about it?” To which he responded, “I adore it.” And I responded, “Really? It’s that colorful?

In this series, David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Isabela Merced (playing Hawkgirl) are among the stars alongside Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

The initial phase of the DC Universe, known as Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, was launched in late 2024 with the debut of Creature Commandos. James Gunn’s universe will kick off with Superman as its first film, offering a variety of movies and TV series. Some of the projects announced include a Batman and Robin movie titled The Brave and the Bold, a film named Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing movie, Clayface, an animated film called Dynamic Duo, and several TV shows.

Superman is set to release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
