As a die-hard fan of gritty, realistic Tamil cinema, I can confidently say that Viduthalai Part 2 is the pièce de résistance of modern-day Tamil Nadu filmmaking. The life experience this masterpiece offers is nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster ride that leaves you yearning for more.
The sequel to “Viduthalai Part 2,” featuring Vijay Sethupathi, has been thriving in theaters since it debuted on December 20th. While some enthusiastic fans have already caught the film in theatres, others are patiently waiting for its online release. In a recent chat, director Vetrimaaran shared that the digital version will offer an extended playtime, including an additional hour of exclusive footage.
The filmmaker announced that the extended version of Viduthalai Part 2, featuring an additional hour, is set to premiere on OTT platforms. In the US, this release will include an extra eight minutes due to last-minute edits made to the movie. Combined, parts 1 and 2 will run approximately eight hours in length.
As a devoted follower, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Viduthalai Part 2, starring the talented Vijay Sethupathi. Although the exact date hasn’t been revealed yet, it’s anticipated that this highly-anticipated movie will start streaming on ZEE5 somewhere between the second and third week of January 2025. Can’t wait to witness the magic on screen!
The movie’s plot commences with Perumal Vaathiyar being arrested by the authorities. As events unfold, we delve into his backstory. Initially a teacher, he finds himself attracted to communist philosophies which eventually transform him into the head of a popular uprising. Gradually, he is perceived as a revolutionary figure and branded an outlaw.
Afterward, Vaathiyar unites in marriage with Mahalakshmi, a shared companion. They persistently work side by side advocating for their convictions and ideals. However, despite his attempts, Vaathiyar is ultimately apprehended by Kumaresan’s troops. The officers involved harbor secret motives.
Originally, Viduthalai was intended to be one movie. However, in 2022, news broke out that the film would actually be divided into two parts. This move was taken to ensure the story remained intact without having to eliminate crucial scenes.
The two segments were filmed consecutively. The first segment wrapped up filming in November 2022 and premiered in theaters on March 31, 2023. The second part required additional shooting, which resumed in July. By July 2024, production had completed its final stages and the movie was released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
In the thrilling sequel to Viduthalai, I proudly take on the role of none other than Kumaresan, portrayed by the exceptional Soori. The formidable Vijay Sethupathi brings Vaathiyaar to life. The graceful Manju Warrier embodies Mahalakshmi, the loving wife of Perumal, while Kishore steps into the role of KK, Perumal’s wise mentor.
In this production, Bhavani Sre assumes the character of Tamilarasi, or Paapa, who becomes Kumaresan’s romantic interest. Gautham Vasudev Menon appears as DSP Sunil Menon I.P.S., while Rajiv Menon plays A. Subramaniyan I.A.S., a role that represents the Chief Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
