The Monkey: Stephen King Horror Flick Is an R-Rated ‘Family Movie,’ Says Theo James

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has braved countless virtual nightmares, I can confidently say that The Monkey seems to be a unique blend of terror and humor, a combination that piques my curiosity. The fact that it’s an R-rated “family movie” intrigues me, as it suggests a dark, yet playful take on the horror genre – something that could potentially offer a fresh perspective in a saturated market.

Theo James says that The Monkey is an R-rated “family movie.”

Upcoming Horror Film “The Monkey,” directed by Osgood Perkins of Longleg, is set to release in February. This chilling movie is adapted from a 1980 short story penned by Stephen King. The star-studded cast includes James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and others.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly regarding the movie, James shared insights on the experience audiences will have when they step into the cinema to watch “The Monkey”.

What did Theo James say about The Monkey?

[Perkins] aimed to produce a film suitable for all ages, yet with an adult rating,” James explained. “It’s incredibly dark, yet it carries a tender emotion, and it’s surprisingly humorous.

Additionally, Perkins discussed the movie, revealing that he intentionally aimed to create a comedic take on the story of The Monkey during its production.

Perkins asked, “Could it be a comedy?” He explained, “Imagine a monkey that’s completely inactive. This is not M3GAN. It doesn’t harm. Yet, it’s malicious simply by existing. Bizarre events occur around it without any clear reason. Its mere presence causes people to die in strange and insane ways.

He went on to say, “I’ve witnessed some incredibly bizarre and tragic deaths. It doesn’t matter if there’s a monkey or not, we all eventually pass away. Imagine being able to accept that fact with a smile! Isn’t it quite absurd, man? We will die; everyone will die. That’s just insane, right? Using humor to address this felt incredibly fitting.

Alongside Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy, The Monkey boasts a star-studded cast. The script, however, is the brilliant work of Perkins.

“In the movie, when twin brothers Bill and Hal stumble upon their father’s ancient monkey toy in the attic, a string of grisly murders ensues. Initially opting to discard the toy and carry on with their lives, the siblings gradually drift apart over time.

The Monkey will be released in United States theaters on February 21, 2025, from Neon.
