Exclusive Host Mortem Trailer Previews Graphic Novel from Carmen Sandiego Host

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of all things time travel and noir, I can’t help but be thoroughly intrigued by the upcoming graphic novel, Host Mortem. Having grown up with the enigmatic charm of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, I find it fascinating to see the creative minds behind those shows stepping into a new adventure.

Soon, ComingSoon will unveil an exclusive sneak peek of the “Host Mortem” trailer, showcasing the forthcoming time-traveling adventure novel penned by Emmy-winning author Kevin Shinick.

What is Host Mortem about?

Mortem hails from Shinick, famously recognized for his role as the host and time-traveling detective in the Emmy-winning series “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?”, as well as a writer on the popular Adult Swim series “Robot Chicken”. Shinick will collaborate with artist Damien Torres, colorist Pippa Bowland, and letterer Taylor Esposito.

A 180-page graphic narrative unfolds the tale of Shinick and Greg Lee, famously known as the host of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, who get mysteriously whisked away to the year 1947 during a comic convention. From there, they are drawn into an intriguing murder case surrounding the classic film The Big Sleep, starring Humphrey Bogart.

Shinick along with their Host Mortem crew are gathering funds through crowdfunding to produce the graphic novel. This book can be backed on both Kickstarter and BackerKit. Contributors who support the book on Kickstarter have the opportunity to choose from various cover designs, including ones created by renowned comic artists like Tony Foti, Timothy Anderson, and Damien Torres. As an added bonus, backers can receive personalized video messages from Shinick and Lee as one of several other perks.

In the book’s summary, it mentions that the character Host Mortem joins TV hosts, Kevin Shinick (known for Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego?) and Greg Lee (famous for Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?). They are mysteriously transported to the year 1947 via a time portal at a comic convention. The plot thickens as they become entangled in a murder mystery surrounding Humphrey Bogart’s iconic noir film, The Big Sleep. When one of the movie stars meets an untimely end, their vast store of trivial knowledge could potentially unravel this intricate Hollywood crime.

In his statement, Shinick mentioned that both he and Greg have had experience hosting game shows. This has led to a collection of random trivia in our minds, and I’ve often wondered what more we could do with this knowledge beyond sharing fun facts like “The singular form of spaghetti is spaghetto.” Since we also played detective roles on Carmen Sandiego (I was a time-traveling detective, while Greg was a classic gumshoe), I found myself questioning how we might handle a real-life mystery. This sparked my curiosity: Are hosts truly intelligent, or do they simply possess the correct answers?

Lee expressed that the concept of two fictional detective game show hosts from the 1990s resolving genuine crimes in the 1940s sounded interesting and potentially promising. Now, thanks to Kevin’s exceptional skill in writing comic books and our shared expertise in game show trickery, I have the pleasure of co-starring with my buddy in Host Mortem! This production features time travel, film noir aesthetics, game show quizzes, and a generous amount of humor since, as it turns out, we may not be as adept at solving murders as we believe.
