'No Good Deed' brings the best talent to a dark (and fantastic) comedy

As a seasoned gamer who’s lived numerous lives in various digital worlds, stepping into the real-life drama of “No Good Deed” was quite a refreshing change of pace. Having binged through countless episodes of fictional soap operas, I must say that this show feels eerily reminiscent of my favorite shows like “Friends” and “Everybody Loves Raymond”. The chemistry between Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano is nothing short of magical, bringing back memories of their iconic roles in those series.

Living like the high-profile residents of Los Angeles’ glamorous scene, a perfect life might seem ideal for one family. However, even in such circumstances, things can go awry at any moment. In the series “No Good Deed,” we follow the story of a couple, Lydia Morgan (played by Lisa Kudrow) and Paul Morgan (Ray Romano), who are trying to sell their Spanish-style home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of LA. The show was developed by Liz Feldman.

In a subtle rewording: Lydia, once a renowned pianist, and Paul, a debt-ridden contractor, are concealing the tragic events surrounding the demise of their son Jacob (portrayed by Wyatt Aubrey) within their household. They engage a real estate agent named Greg (played by Matt Rogers), who conducts tours for three distinct families vying for the Morgan residence.

Other potential buyers are eagerly waiting to buy Lydia and Paul’s house, since three families are keen to learn all the facts before submitting their offers.

The few few episodes of No Good Deed make for thrilling (and dark) comedy

Leslie (Abbi Jacobson), who’s married to Sarah (Poppy Liu), is keen on buying the Morgans’ house since Sarah yearns to start a family with her spouse. Being an LA prosecutor, Leslie harbors suspicions about the Morgans’ history and conducts some investigations by sneaking into their home and searching for information online about them and the property.

Dennis (O-T Fagbenle) and Carla (Teyonnah Parris), a couple who got married without knowing each other too well, are facing a dilemma regarding buying a house under growing financial stress. Dennis’ mother, Denise (Anna Maria Horsford), urges them to share their life together, but Carla is hesitant about having her live with them due to personal reasons. It is worth mentioning that Carla is expecting a child.

Margo (Linda Cardellini) and Gwen (Kate Moening) are real estate entrepreneurs considering joining forces for business, while also maintaining a clandestine romantic relationship. They plan to make a financial gain by renovating and selling the Morgan house.

JD Campbell, portrayed by Luke Wilson, is an unemployed daytime drama actor facing the need to move out of his grand residence due to a visit from his talent representatives. In an effort to preserve his existing lifestyle and meet expectations set by his spouse, he continues his job search amid financial obligations.

Initially, Kudrow and Romano display genuine acting talents within the series, evoking a feel similar to ‘Friends’ and ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. Throughout these early episodes, these two actors shoulder much of the show’s burden as their on-screen rapport significantly impacts the entire cast.

In a more casual, conversational style, Kudrow delivers a hilarious and sharp-witted performance, much like she does in other movies and shows, with her lively character. Romano excels at portraying his character as an ordinary person, making it easy for the audience to connect.

Due to a lack of alternatives, Lydia and Paul find themselves concealed behind locked doors while Greg is giving tours of the house to prospective buyers. The painful recollections of their son’s ordeal continue to linger in their minds.

In the Los Feliz area, the Morgans’ daughter has been unwilling to communicate with them ever since their son, Jacob, passed away. The enigma surrounding Jacob remains unsolved.

Meanwhile, Paul’s sibling, Mikey (Denis Leary), has been released from prison due to drug-related charges and is insisting that Paul hand over $80,000 within a day. In an attempt to meet this demand, Lydia decides to sell the piano. However, Paul harbors doubts about this solution.

In the early episodes, it becomes apparent that Lydia and Paul have differing opinions on selling their house and finding suitable buyers. While Paul is eager to sell the property, Lydia struggles with the idea of leaving their home behind. As various families express interest in the house, a mystery surrounding a death adds intrigue, leaving viewers guessing about who will ultimately purchase the house.
