These films must be at least ten years old and deemed significant culturally, historically or aesthetically important. According to Variety, over 6,700 movies suggested by the public for inclusion have been added to this collection, with films such as Spy Kids, The Social Network, and others now part of it.
In a similar vein to last year’s National Film Registry choices emphasizing diversity with movies such as Sounder and The Watermelon Woman, the Library of Congress (as reported by NBC News) opted to feature “significant works featuring Hispanic artists or themes.” Among these selections is the film Spy Kids, which boasts a talented Hispanic cast including Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo, and Alexa PenaVega, directed by Robert Rodriguez. Jacqueline Stewart, head of the National Film Preservation Board, explained the process behind selecting each film in a statement.
