Our top 5 favorite moments from the Game Awards 2024

As a long-time gaming enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the 2024 Game Awards were nothing short of spectacular. From the moment Harrison Ford graced us with his presence and delivered a performance that could only be described as “Ford-like”, I knew we were in for a treat.

Last Thursday, during their tenth anniversary show on December 12th, The Game Awards presented a spectacular event, with Geoff Keighley and his team going above and beyond. There was an abundance of new game reveals, unexpected winners, and surprise appearances that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Plus, it set a new viewership record!

Here, without any specific ranking, we’re sharing our top five exciting moments from the 2024 Game Awards.

Harrison Ford, the GOAT, shows up, does GOAT-y things

Pay attention. Since he’s Harrison Ford, he’s free to do as he pleases. There’s no denying his gruff demeanor, but deep down, he remains fond of the character Indiana Jones.

It’s clear as day from the grin on his face, as he exits to a standing ovation, flashes the classic Harrison Ford gesture, teases Troy Baker (who delivers an outstanding Indiana Jones voice in The Great Circle), and waves off the teleprompter, urging it to hurry up and announce the nominees for best performance.

Our first look at The Witcher 4

If The Game Awards attendees were asked prior to the event what topics might be discussed, it’s unlikely that The Witcher 4 would have been among their predictions.

CD Projekt Red unveiled the initial cinematic trailer for what appears to be The Witcher 4, and it seems we’ll be taking on the role of Ciri this time. She looks amazing, embodying the Witcher essence perfectly and making a strong successor to Geralt. The game promises an ideal balance of story, combat, and repercussions typical of a Witcher title.

And it’s just a teaser trailer.

Naughty Dog’s next project

The evening was filled with significant unveilings, and among them was the disclosure of Naughty Dog’s upcoming venture – “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”. Since the launch of “The Last of Us Part II” in 2020, this developer has been relatively quiet. It’s refreshing to learn that their new project is not another installment of “The Last of Us” or “Uncharted”, although those would undoubtedly be fantastic continuations.

For now, it doesn’t provide many specific details, but it’s intriguing enough to make us curious about what additional information might be uncovered in the upcoming months.

The Muppets hanging out and being their Muppet-y selves

As a gamer, I’m still seething about Disney shutting down Muppet*Vision 3D. So, witnessing Statler and Waldorf mocking Geoff Keighley at the start of the event was like applying a comforting salve to a wound.

But honestly the highlight had to be Gonzo going full Sunny on Keighley regarding chickens in video games. I think he really has some fair points…

Balatro winning best indie game and best debut indie

Balatro, launched in February this year, has captivated the internet with its growing popularity over the past few months. Nominated for Game of the Year, it’s undergone a significant level of scrutiny – and for good reason. View it as a blend of roguelike elements and poker gameplay; while there remains an element of chance, you might find yourself compelled to keep playing, tempted by one more round to see if you can top the previous run.

As a passionate fan, I must admit, Balatro didn’t bag the prestigious Game of the Year title, but it certainly shone in other categories. It won Best Indie Game and Best Indie Debut, which is truly commendable given that it was crafted single-handedly by LocalThunk. The anonymity he maintained at the Game Awards only added to the mystery and intrigue surrounding his creation.
