Mufasa: The Lion King’s Reviews Lead to Mediocre Rotten Tomatoes & Metacritic Scores

As a long-time enthusiast of Disney animation, I have seen my fair share of remakes and sequels, some that soared to new heights and others that left me yearning for the original. Mufasa: The Lion King, with its photorealistic approach, seems to be teetering on the edge of both categories.

The Lion King movie, featuring Mufasa, first appeared on the big screen at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on December 9, 2024. It’s set for a broader release this coming Friday. Critics’ reactions to this photorealistic animated production have been rather mild, leading to average ratings on review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, which calculate scores using a weighted average system.

Mufasa: The Lion King gets mixed reviews from critics

Mufasa: The Lion King movie has received a variety of feedback, mostly split opinions, from film critics. According to Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon, audiences should expect an average level of visual appeal when watching the movie, as he awarded it a score of 5 out of 10 in his review.

According to BBC’s Nicholas Barber, the film was deemed as unnecessary and a money-making scheme, and he pointed out issues with both its animation and screenplay.

In simpler terms, Evan Dossey from Midwest Film Journal argued that there weren’t many ways to alter the movie’s plot because its main character’s downfall lies in being an exceptional version of Simba (the Lion King).

Barry Hertz from The Globe and Mail mentioned that the film Mufasa: The Lion King, which is both a sequel and prequel to the 2019 remake of the 1994 classic The Lion King, performs well in several aspects. Yet, Hertz pointed out that the movie struggles because it’s also a prequel, making it feel heavy at times.

Some reactions to Mufasa: The Lion King aren’t all unfavorable. Justin Clark from Slant Magazine noted that since it wasn’t required to replicate vast sections of the original Lion King exactly, this version had the freedom to reflect the style and vision of its director.

Kevin Maher from The Times commended Jenkins for delving very deeply into the story about orphanhood, family disputes, and claiming a throne. He found that this movie was just as exciting as Gladiator II, because it had anthropomorphic animal characters who were more well-developed than many human characters in mainstream movies at the multiplex.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores aren’t praise-worthy

Mufasa: As of now, The Lion King has received a mixed to average review with a 59% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 83 reviews and a score of 58 out of 100 on Metacritic after 36 reviews. However, the true test lies ahead when it hits theaters.
