Naughty Dog's new game Intergalactic faces major backlash after first trailer

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for Naughty Dog’s masterful storytelling and immersive gameplay, I must admit that their latest announcement left me somewhat puzzled. The reveal of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet at The Game Awards stirred up quite the storm online, and not in a good way.

At The Game Awards, Naughty Dog, known for hit series such as The Last of Us, Crash Bandicoot, and Uncharted, unveiled their latest game, which garnered mixed reactions on the web.

In their upcoming production titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” they have opted for a science fiction theme and unveiled a 4-minute preview. This sneak peek presents Jordan, a bounty hunter who finds herself on an alien planet, battling mechanical adversaries using a blade strikingly resembling a lightsaber from Star Wars. However, the online reaction hasn’t been about the Star Wars-like environment; instead, it’s the shocking reveal that Jordan, the protagonist, shaves her head in the trailer’s opening moments. Prepare your torches, anti-progressive content enthusiasts!

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – What’s the problem, again?

In simple terms, Naughty Dog’s trailer doesn’t reveal many details, but it shows that the character Jordan is in space with a unique spacecraft (interestingly, it resembles a Porsche). This small revelation that our protagonist is female and has an unconventional appearance sparked a lot of excited comments on YouTube. In fact, the reactions were so intense that Naughty Dog decided to disable the comment section – which isn’t typically a positive start.

Although PlayStation’s account hasn’t improved significantly, the general opinion isn’t drastically different either – the comments remain amusing if one doesn’t overthink their content.

I feel like Will Smith will slap me for making fun of her.

That Dog isn’t Naughty anymore

In essence, the comments aren’t directly about the gameplay itself; instead, they often criticize Jordan’s looks and discuss that many creators behind iconic games such as Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, or The Last of Us are no longer part of Naughty Dog. Yet, the studio continues to boast about their past triumphs.

The announcement trailer sparked the discussion about “going woke” again in the video game industry – the fact that Ciri will take over from Geralt in The Witcher 4 didn’t help, and there are corners of the internet where the mere thought of having to play as a woman is the worst thing in the world. Or, second worst: having to play as a woman with a shaved head definitely takes the cake.

In the face of strong criticism over their character selection in The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog has shown a determination to stick with their original plan. This decision was made following a mix of valid and somewhat trivial criticisms that the game has received so far.

Intergalactic will still take some time

It’s still unclear when we’ll have the opportunity to encounter Jordan personally, as Naughty Dog hasn’t disclosed a release date yet. However, what is certain is that the game will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 initially. Previous trends suggest that PC gamers will eventually get access to the game, but it may take some additional time.

The initial response was far from favorable, to say the least, but most PC gamers likely won’t shed any tears over it. However, if you haven’t abandoned the game already, here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect:

The Heretic Prophet is the newest franchise in development for the PlayStation 5 console from Naughty Dog, the studio behind acclaimed series like The Last of Us and UNCHARTED. Set thousands of years in the future, Intergalactic puts players into the role of Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.
