The Blue Bloods series finale only proved why the show should continue

As a seasoned gamer of TV shows and a diehard fan of Blue Bloods, I must confess that the series finale left me with a mix of emotions – satisfaction and longing for more. The finale was a rollercoaster ride filled with drama, suspense, and heartfelt moments that truly encapsulated the essence of the Reagan family.

Blue Bloods had an amazing series finale, but it proved why this show should continue!

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the Blue Bloods series finale

In the final episode of “Blue Bloods,” there was an exhilarating turn of events when a criminal group initiated a sequence of assaults in a bid for pardons for their associates. This resulted in the shooting of Mayor Chase, who from his hospital bed handed over symbolic “keys to the city” to Frank, instructing him to take any necessary actions to quell the turmoil.

Alongside them, Eddie and Badillo suffered an attack; sadly, Badillo lost his life, whereas Eddie sustained injuries. In a joint effort, Jamie and Joe pursued the murderer relentlessly, eventually leading to Eddie apprehending the culprit.

In a nutshell, Frank was kept busy as he attempted to halt the violent gang feud, eventually persuading a jailed leader (portrayed by Edward James Olmos) to aid in calming the situation. Simultaneously, Danny and Baez found out that adversary Carlos had kidnapped his own daughter following her plea for assistance to Eddie. They traced him down, with Danny successfully apprehending the man instead of allowing him to take his own life. The overarching storyline concludes at Badillo’s funeral, where the entire Reagan family and half of the NYPD paid their respects. Frank acknowledged and honored the fallen man’s sacrifice.

However, the significant changes were more related to personal matters. Firstly, following a conversation with Henry about his tendency to bring work home, Danny recognized the need for change. This led him to invite Baez out on a dinner date, since he felt it was appropriate given her interest. Simultaneously, after discussing their rekindled relationship, Erin and Jack chose to tie the knot again in a small, intimate ceremony.

Suitably, the last scene unfolded as a grand family gathering, where Nicky and Jack made their long-awaited return. Just as Erin was ready to share the exciting news of her engagement, Eddie walked in, carrying an old baby crib – a treasure that Erin intended to use for herself and Jamie, as she was expecting.

And so Blue Bloods ended with so much that means it should have continued.

Why Blue Bloods should continue

On one side, the finale effectively concludes the series. We catch glimpses of Frank in leadership, the entire family reunited, Erin appearing content, Jamie and Eddie on the brink of parenthood, and Danny preparing for a new romance with his long-term companion. It’s a fitting end after 14 seasons.

The issue is that it also leaves fans wanting so much more. The obvious is the idea of Eddie as a mom, as she’ll no doubt stay on the streets as much as she can before she has to go on leave. She and Jamie have to face the realization that it’s dangerous being cops and parents, and that could add some drama to things. Eddie is also still feeling the loss of Badillo and the fun idea that she has a son, and she names him after her fallen partner.

Erin’s storyline is equally captivating, as she and Jack attempt another chance together. The rest of the family might have mixed feelings about this, considering their past separation and Jack believing Frank dislikes him. It would be intriguing to explore Nicky’s reactions to his parents reconciling and how it could impact Erin’s role as a District Attorney. Since she is dating a defense attorney, potential conflicts of interest may arise in her professional life.

Additionally, we have Danny and Baez who share a strong bond that could potentially blossom into a romantic relationship. While this development might pose challenges for their professional partnership, considering how closely they work together, the actors’ chemistry is undeniably compelling. It seems past time for Danny to explore a new romance.

It might be better for some viewers if the show concludes with a thought-provoking finale instead of continuing in a repetitive manner, similar to many other series. This could imply that the Reagan storyline remains ongoing across generations. However, leaving plotlines unresolved and fans without closure appears unfair. In essence, “Blue Bloods” is about the Reagan family’s journey, both as law enforcement officers and as a family, and not delivering on significant developments would be disappointing.

Although it wasn’t their preference, the show was canceled by CBS against the producers’ wishes who had planned to continue. The writers skillfully wrote an ending that honored the NYPD’s sacrifices and left everyone hopeful for the future. It’s unfortunate that fans won’t witness more of this story arc, making it both satisfying as a finale but also leaving us wondering about what might have been.

Blue Bloods seasons 1-14 are streaming on Paramount+.
