As someone who has attended numerous Game Awards and witnessed the excitement and anticipation of developers waiting for their big moment, I must say that the response from the Black Myth Wukong team was both heartwarmingly genuine and surprisingly emotional. It’s not every day you see a team pouring their hearts into a project for years, only to feel the sting of defeat when they don’t take home the coveted Game of the Year award.
In an extraordinary move in the year 2024, Chinese video game developer Game Science unveiled the initial major AAA Chinese game that spanned both PC and console platforms. Remarkably, Black Myth Wukong was recognized as a top contender for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. However, it was PlayStation’s exclusive platformer Astro Bot that ultimately secured the victory in this prestigious award ceremony.
As a gaming enthusiast, I was there at The Game Awards, rooting for Black Myth Wukong to win. However, when the winner was announced and it wasn’t our game, tears welled up in my eyes. It was clear that the team from Game Science felt just as disappointed as I did with their loss to a platforming game.
Black Myth Wukong devs cry
During a recent live broadcast, Alanah Pearce, a former games journalist, Funhaus star, Cyberpunk 2077 voice actress, and ex-Sony Santa Monica writer, disclosed that the creators of Black Myth Wukong were disappointed following their defeat at The Game Awards 2024.
This year, Pearce found himself right up front,” he shared. “In fact, it was his inaugural experience seated in the front row. He exclaimed something along the lines of ‘Wow, thanks Geoff, fantastic seats!’ Since being in the front row grants you a clear view, you can spot all of the truly influential figures.
Pearce shared that she was seated alongside the PlayStation first-party team and the other nominees for the Game of the Year Award in the same row. When Astro Bot was declared the winner of the Game of the Year award, the representatives from the Black Myth Wukong team started crying.
“A member of the Black Myth Wukong team was visibly emotional when Astro Bot won Game of the Year, according to a bystander. This was unusual because usually, people are nonchalant about The Game Awards, but this time, some members of the Wukong team appeared teary-eyed upon not winning.
Pearce shared that the team behind Black Myth felt deeply honored by the award and acknowledged that their work was truly remarkable. She added that, naturally, they were disappointed not to have won, but this sentiment was also understandable. Yet, what took her aback was the entire event itself, as it had been several years since she’d last attended these awards.

Devs wrote their acceptance speech years before release
After The Game Awards 2024, Game Science founder Feng Ji shared his thoughts about the situation on the Chinese social media platform Weibo with fans. In a post (translated using Google Translate), Ji revealed that he had actually penned the team’s Game of the Year acceptance speech two years prior to the game’s release, and expressed disappointment over the outcome.
This year’s nominated games are all outstanding,” the developer remarked, “but I’m struggling to grasp the criteria for Game of the Year this season. I feel a bit disappointed, like my visit was pointless!
Amongst an impressive lineup of top-tier games, Black Myth Wukong holds its ground admirably. Sharing the spotlight with stellar titles like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, the captivating Astro Bot, the indie sensation Balatro, the thought-provoking Metaphor Refantazio, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Black Myth Wukong stands tall among these remarkable games. Who knows, perhaps a sequel, Black Myth 2: Wukong Harder, will outshine them all when it eventually makes its debut.
