Outlander didn't get the same actor to play George Washington in season 7

As a dedicated Outlander fan who has followed the series from its inception, I must say that the latest casting change for General George Washington was a bit jarring at first. However, after reflecting on my extensive theater experiences, I realize that even the Bard of Avon himself had different actors playing his roles throughout his works!

In the twelfth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, General George Washington was featured, although it wasn’t the same likeness of him we’ve encountered earlier in the series.

Hey there! As I sat down with George in the game room, he seemed familiar, and then it clicked – we’d crossed paths before. When our eyes met, he casually asked if we’d ever met. It didn’t take long for us to connect over the atrocious production we’d both seen at the Wilmington Theater. Sharing that memory was just what we needed to break the ice, especially since George had an urgent request of mine.

It seems there’s been a switch-up with the actors. Although some beloved characters have returned, the actor portraying George Washington is no longer in the role.

Simon Harrison played George Washington in Outlander season 4

In Outlander’s fourth season, episode 8 is where we encountered George Washington. Their encounter was brief and took place during Jamie and Claire’s visit to the theater. It was during this event that Claire performed surgery in full view of everyone, serving both as a diversion for Jamie and providing genuine medical aid to a man.

In a particular episode, Simon Harrison portrayed George Washington. Unfortunately, due to conflicting schedules, it seems the show was unable to secure his return for a second appearance. Given his recent roles in productions such as “His Dark Materials” and “Until I Kill You”, it’s not surprising that he has been quite busy.

Gary Fannin took on the role in Outlander season 7

In the latest installment, Gary Fannin stepped into the character of General George Washington. Being a U.S. actor based in London, he was able to join the cast – a feat facilitated by complex union regulations. Consequently, the authentic American accent in the series was not affected by any acting adjustments.

Is it uncertain if we’ll meet George again? Given our current stage in the Revolutionary War, it’s hard to say. However, what I’d be intrigued to observe is George Washington bestowing a blue coat on Jamie, considering he ends up with one later on.

Outlander airs on Fridays on STARZ.
