As an old-timer who’s seen his fair share of battles and heartaches, I can say that this latest chapter in the lives of Claire and Jamie Fraser is as tumultuous as ever. The intrigue, the drama, the passion – it all comes together in a way only Outlander can deliver.
In this rendition, we find that Jamie becomes privy to John and Claire’s evening experiences, whereas William uncovers additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding his birth. Let us delve into the happenings of Outlander season 7, episode 12.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Outlander season 7, episode 12.
In this scenario, Lord John Grey discovers himself in a vulnerable position, surrounded by rebels. Simultaneously, William uncovers information that causes him to doubt every aspect of his existence. The dynamics of relationships shift during the course of the episode.
Lord John Grey tells Jamie the truth in Outlander season 7, episode 12
One might assume that given Jamie’s history of violence, Lord John Grey would be aware of this trait. However, surprisingly, he shares the details of their drunken night with Claire. Initially, Jamie finds this amusing, doubting its veracity due to his understanding of Lord John Grey’s character and his knowledge of Claire. It isn’t until Lord John persists in detailing the incident that Jamie begins to entertain the possibility that it might be true.
This situation triggers a significant argument. Worse still, Lord John Grey implies they were intimating with Jamie at the time. To be fair, his choice of words could use some refinement, but it’s the implication that upsets Jamie, leading to an argument ensuing.
In another rendition: The dialogue between the two individuals was cut short as a band of rebels arrived. Recognizing him as a British soldier, despite his lack of uniform, they decided to capture Lord John Grey. Upon discovering a letter from the previous episode granting him his commission back, the rebels suspected him of espionage and led him away to their camp.
Colonel Woodbine escorts Lord John Grey to meet their superior. The issue isn’t so much about him being a spy; rather, it’s due to his distantly related status to Charles Grey, who was infamous for the slaughter of many Americans during a past conflict. This massacre has led to Lord John Grey’s potential execution. However, John attempts to reason that his brother, Hal, holds influence within the government and could potentially intervene on his behalf.
In this rather amiable exchange, I found myself receiving the necessary medical attention – and let me tell you, it was quite timely as my eye had begun to swell significantly, raising concerns it might be lost. Fortunately, Denny Hunter, who just so happens to be our camp’s physician, was on hand, providing a familiar face amidst the camp’s bustle. However, Denny noticed something more serious: a bone fracture impeding the proper functioning of my eye muscle – a concern that led to my eventual acquisition of an eye patch.
Denny mentions that he wishes Claire was present instead, which initially puzzles John. However, it soon becomes clear to him that Denny is referring to his spouse, Claire. John then reveals that Jamie is still alive and it was he who made this happen. This news brings joy to Denny and the rest of their family, but things seem grim for Lord John Grey.
In this situation, Denny discovers that John is facing execution. Desperate to rescue John, Denny is prepared to take risks for his friend’s safety. However, John refuses to endanger Denny. Consequently, Denny decides to reveal the path leading to the main road, providing an opportunity for John to flee and potentially save himself.
In the dead of night, John successfully slips away, prompting the guards to launch a search for him. Is it likely that he’ll manage to elude them, or will his time as a captive continue?
William learns the truth about his birth
William struggles deeply with the knowledge that he is no longer the son of Lord Ellesmere. He goes to see Claire to ask her how much she knew, getting information about how his birth happened. He’s more worried that it was rape, which Claire points out wasn’t the case at all. Jamie and Geneva loved each other as much as they could. It’s interesting that she puts it that way, but it’s possibly just to soothe William a little.
“It’s broken.
Currently, it remains that William holds the title of Lord Ellesmere, as at that point, he was married to Geneva. This makes him recognized as William’s father. Yet, William is privy to the truth, and he must grapple with the knowledge that his father was a Jacobite traitor and now a Rebel.
The situation continues to deteriorate for William. First, he gets into a confrontation with a prostitute, followed by a physical altercation with Young Ian. As Young Ian is led away by British soldiers, William receives a harsh slap from Rachel. In response to his attempt to kiss her, she spits contemptuously on the ground. Rachel may struggle to forgive William’s actions, but she sympathizes with the hardships he is experiencing.
Since Jamie discovers that Young Ian has been taken into custody at the hand of William, he decides to visit his son. Determined to reveal William’s true identity if necessary, Jamie warns him to free Ian immediately. Naturally, William aims to avoid this situation, so he arranges for Young Ian’s release so he can reunite with Rachel once more.
That evening, William chooses to rejoin the group of men. Eventually, they return to the same brothel he visited the previous night. Captain Harkness displays abhorrent behavior, expressing his desire for a woman who is unwilling and inexperienced. Feeling attracted to the prostitute from the previous night, William finds himself in a disagreement with Harkness over her, but ultimately manages to secure her company.
In a brief exchange, it’s clear that Arabella isn’t her name. William expresses his desire to spend the night with her, but makes it clear he won’t follow through. He mentions this because he had already rescued a girl from Harkness, and doesn’t want to take on such a role himself. In this story, we can presume Lord John Grey as William’s father. He advises William that the best thing he can give Arabella is a good night’s sleep, which is what he plans to do instead of anything more.
Although William claims to allow Jane (her actual name) to rest, she doesn’t seem inclined towards sleep. Instead, they end up sleeping together, with the initiative not coming from William. He emphasizes that his remaining promise is all he has left and he must honor it. Later, there’s a poignant moment for William as he inquires about why she made him breach his word.
For readers eagerly anticipating Jane’s narrative from “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood”, this is where we finally delve into it, albeit partially. The extent of the revelations remains uncertain, but yes, Arabella is none other than Jane, and we can’t wait to see how William’s life unfolds with her.
Jamie passes on messages from France in Outlander
What were the hidden items that Jamie didn’t want anyone to discover? The answer to this query is those items being the letters from France.
He takes them to Morgan, who sees the value in them. He wants Jamie to meet a certain someone. That someone is George Washington—and yes, they comment on how they’ve met before. With the information Jamie has and the loyalty he’s shown, Washington offers Jamie the charge of a rebellion.
At long last, I’ve made my way to see Claire. Now is the time for me to hear her account of what transpired, an account that, surprisingly enough, seems to align with John’s version of events. I won’t let her slip out of telling the truth about any of this. The entire situation has left me seething with anger, and I’m determined to uncover every detail that took place that night. So, Claire begins to recount the events of that fateful evening.
Claire confesses that she had thoughts of taking her own life that night, which undoubtedly affected Jamie’s behavior. She mentions that she had run out of brandy and was contemplating going to get some more or drinking a full bottle of laudanum instead. As we recall from the previous episode, we know what followed this revelation.
Claire is curious about what happened between Jamie and John. Though Claire doubts that Jamie would harm John, it seems Jamie isn’t entirely confident either. As they continue their conversation, Jamie reveals that he holds no grudge against both Claire and John for getting married. Additionally, he acknowledges that at the time of their encounter, Claire was under the influence of alcohol, which may have affected her decision-making process.
As the moments tick by with Mary McNab, Claire mentions she hasn’t asked about the specifics, nor does she blame Jamie for his actions with that woman. We both agree that our circumstances were unlike any other. This conversation only fuels Jamie’s disdain for John, yet he admits he didn’t take John’s life and confesses he’s uncertain if he regrets not doing so or not. One fact remains certain – Jamie’s anger towards me isn’t because of everything that transpired between us.
Based on the information you’ve provided, Now that it’s clear Claire remains his wife, Jamie has decided he won’t discuss the matter any further. It’s high time they reconcile.
