As a devoted reader who’s been following Jenny L. Howe for quite some time now, I can confidently say that her latest offering, “How to Get a Life in Ten Dates,” is an absolute treat! Last year, I devoured “On the Plus Side” like a hungry bear preparing for hibernation, and this year, I was eagerly waiting for another serving of her unique brand of romance.
During the last holiday season, Jenny L. Howe published “On the Plus Side,” and since then, I’ve been excitedly waiting for more from her. Fortunately, we now have “How to Get a Life in Ten Dates” coming our way.
In case you’re familiar with Jenny L. Howe’s work, you’ll recognize that she crafts stories about larger-sized characters embarking on love journeys, and these tales deviate from typical romantic narratives in delightful ways. Although her books may initially seem formulaic, the author skillfully alters the storyline, leaving readers eager to cheer for the blossoming romance.
In the book titled “How to Get a Life in Ten Dates“, the narrative centers around our protagonist, Haleigh, as she entrusts her romantic life to those closest to her. Needless to say, such an approach could lead to quite a few mishaps.
Regardless, I was incredibly excited to pick this one up and see if Jenny L. Howe would dazzle me once again. Thankfully, St. Martin’s Griffin was kind enough to send me an ARC so I was able to read and review this one.
How to Get a Life in Ten Dates is a fun story with some unlikely tropes.
In an attempt to escape solitude and endless chatter about singleness, Hadleigh decides to entrust her friends, who know her well, with choosing her suitors. However, there’s a complication: she harbors deep feelings for her best friend, Jack, who is also tasked with finding suitable matches. At first glance, the situation might appear overly dramatic, but this book delivers on the expectations it sets.
Regardless, the book titled “How to Get a Life in Ten Dates” offers insights into Hadleigh’s life, her challenges, and her intricate relationships with those around her. Initially, many readers find themselves supporting Jack and wishing for their romantic connection. However, an incident during their Hawaiian vacation changed everything, turning them into the closest of friends, devoid of any romantic tension since then.
Nonetheless, it’s evident that everyone is wishing for Jack and Hadleigh to become a couple. Interestingly, this plotline unfolds during Hadleigh’s sister’s engagement celebration. Similar to Jenny L. Howe’s past novels, this tale carries a low-key intensity, but Hadleigh frequently wavers in her emotions and decisions throughout the book. At certain moments, Hadleigh can be aggravating as she strives to make the right choices, yet sometimes things don’t go as planned, making her more relatable.
In the final analysis, it’s likely clear to many of us who Hadleigh will eventually be paired with, but the back-and-forth narrative keeps things engaging and fun to read. Although this book might not appeal to everyone, for me, it was a delightful and charming romance that I found hard to put down.
How to Get a Life in Ten Dates by Jenny L. Howe is out now where books are sold.
