Netflix’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is a captivating series split into 16 episodes, with Part 1 (consisting of eight episodes) now streaming on the platform as of December 11, 2024. With viewers eagerly awaiting its conclusion, they’re left wondering how this compelling tale about various generations of the Buendía family and their lives in the imaginary town of Macondo will come to an end.
Here’s what happens when One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 1 draws to a close.
What happens at the end of One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 1?
In Part 1, Colonel Aureliano Buendía (played by Claudio Cataño), takes over the Revolutionary Forces in a Caribbean nation. He initiates a war against the entire political establishment of the country, battling both conservatives and former allies, the liberals. Leaving a path of violence and casualties, Aureliano ultimately returns to Macondo. Despite his mother Úrsula’s (Marleyda Soto) heartfelt plea for peace, he continues his aggressive stance against the government forces, as Part 1 concludes.
Later on, Loren Sofia’s character, Amaranta, breaks up with Aureliano Jose, who is both her nephew and the son of Aureliano and Pilar Ternera. She advises him to depart from Macondo.
As José Arcadio Buendía (Diego Vásquez), the family matriarch and co-founder of Macondo, enters his last moments, he’s unbound from the tree and taken inside. In his final hours, he experiences intense visions involving his kin. That very night, a cascade of yellow blossoms falls over the town, symbolizing the profound transformations that the Buendía family and Macondo will undergo in the ensuing years.
How did José Arcadio die in One Hundred Years of Solitude?
In the closing chapter of One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 1, José Arcadio (Édgar Vittorino) meets a mysterious end. While he is about to embrace love with Rebeca, the doors suddenly close behind him. A gunshot rings out, followed by a trail of blood that reaches Ursula in an almost supernatural manner, signaling her son’s demise. However, the novel leaves it unclear whether José Arcadio died by his own hand, was murdered, or if something otherworldly occurred. In her grief, Úrsula cradles her deceased son, and the narrator concludes, “That may have been the only enigma in Macondo that remained unsolved.
Subsequently, Rebecca withdraws from public life, making her an unlikely suspect in the crime. It seems Jose Arcadio’s demise was the consequence of unresolved past issues. Despite his pursuit of tranquility, he was forced to settle accounts for his wrongdoings.
