As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the financial markets, I have witnessed the evolution and transformation of various asset classes, from the dot-com bubble to the global financial crisis, and now, the advent of digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC).
BlackRock Inc., headquartered in New York, boasting over $11.5 trillion in managed assets, has seen remarkable success with its approach to Bitcoin integration. This multinational investment firm has carved out a niche within the cryptocurrency sector by introducing products such as the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and the iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA).
Indeed, it’s the impressive expansion of IBIT to approximately $53.8 billion in managed assets that has sparked widespread interest. Furthermore, Ki Young Ju, the founder of CryptoQuant, recently pointed out that IBIT surpassed BlackRock’s Gold ETF within just a year since its establishment.
BlackRock on Sizing Bitcoin ln Portfolios
Based on a BlackRock report issued on Thursday, December 12, it’s recommended for investors to view Bitcoin as a potential addition to a diverse investment portfolio, much like mega-cap tech stocks. This influential investment company emphasizes that Bitcoin should not be equated with conventional assets, but rather, it can be thought of as being compatible within a traditional investment framework.
In addition, leading Fed figures view Bitcoin as a form of digital gold, with a strong possibility of surpassing the value of the traditional gold market. Consequently, BlackRock advises its investors to ponder over allocating between 1-2% of their conventional portfolios – which are typically made up of 60% stocks and 40% bonds – to Bitcoin.
BlackRock suggests that including around 1-2% of Bitcoin in traditional investment portfolios might carry a comparable level of risk as investing in the ‘Magnificent 7,’ a group primarily comprised of large-tech companies.
Though Bitcoin’s connection to other assets is limited, its high volatility means it contributes about as much to overall risk. In essence, adding Bitcoin to your portfolio could offer a unique source of risk diversification. On the other hand, investing heavily in the ‘Magnificent 7’ could increase existing risks and concentrate your portfolio.” – Samara Cohen, BlackRock’s CIO of ETF and index investments, in her paper.
In the meantime, BlackRock advises its investors to keep their Bitcoin holdings limited to no more than 2%, as this can heighten the overall investment risk. Previously, the price of Bitcoin has dropped by up to 80% during significant market downturns, leading to substantial and prolonged losses.
Over time, the general level of Bitcoin’s price volatility has decreased, while its correlation with stock market returns has grown stronger.

Impact on BTC
The increasing acceptance of Bitcoin by institutions has noticeably influenced market behavior, as the amount of Bitcoin on centralized exchanges fell below 2.23 million units by December 12. It’s worth mentioning that the total accumulated Bitcoin held by US spot ETFs now surpasses the 1 million BTC kept in dormant wallets by Satoshi Nakamoto, underscoring the extraordinary level of institutional investment in the cryptocurrency sector.
In the near future, experts predict that the value of Bitcoin could surge dramatically, possibly reaching $1 million, if the U.S. government decides to strategically hold a Bitcoin reserve.
