As a child of the ’90s who grew up with the classic Tom and Jerry cartoons, I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming movie! Rashida Jones, known for her roles in Boston Public and The Office, is writing the script, and she’s bringing along some serious talent from her Le Train Train banner. It’s like a dream team of animation and comedy coming together to bring our beloved cat and mouse duo back to life.
A fresh Tom and Jerry film is being produced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, featuring Rashida Jones, known for her roles in shows like Boston Public and The Office, who will pen the screenplay.
The Tom and Jerry feature is considered a fresh take on the over 100 cartoons created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in the 1940s, which earned numerous awards before MGM eventually chose to discontinue their animation department.
Who’s behind the planned Tom and Jerry movie?
According to a Deadline report, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been tapped to co-write the upcoming Tom and Jerry movie alongside Will McCormack and Michael Govier! This exciting project falls under the supervision of Bill Damaschke at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.
Beyond just being writers, Jones and McCormack will additionally take on roles as directors and producers under the Le Train Train label. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are responsible for directing this production, while Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, and Tessa Thompson have also joined the cast of the project.
For many years, the animated short film series Tom and Jerry has been a fan favorite, consistently ranking among the best of all time. It’s given birth to numerous spin-offs such as The Tom and Jerry Show, The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, Tom & Jerry Kids, and Tom and Jerry Tales since its debut. In 1992, it even made its first venture into full-length movies with the release of Tom and Jerry: The Movie.
Among the films adapted from the series are titles such as “Tom and Jerry’s Enchanted Ring,” “Tom and Jerry’s Speedway Spectacle,” “Tom and Jerry’s Nutcracker Escapade,” “Tom and Jerry’s Hoodwinked Heroes,” and “Tom and Jerry’s Monumental Mishaps.
In 2021, a movie called “Tom & Jerry” directed by Tim Story hit the screens. This was a unique blend of live-action and 3D animation. The star-studded cast included Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Ken Jeong, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, and several others.
