As a long-time Yellowstone fan with countless hours invested in following the Dutton family saga, I must say I was somewhat taken aback by the unexpected focus on Travis Wheatley (played by Taylor Sheridan) in the penultimate episode of Season 5. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good character development, but with just a few minutes left until the season finale, I was yearning for more Dutton drama rather than delving into Wheatley’s life.
Fans of the Yellowstone series have expressed dissatisfaction over the significant screen time given to the character Travis Wheatley, played by Taylor Sheridan, in the second-to-last episode of Season 5. Entitled “Give the World Away,” this episode features several scenes involving Wheatley, including a game of strip poker and his girlfriend’s confession. Following the airing of the episode, many viewers took to social media to voice their displeasure about the extensive focus on this character.
Here’s a detailed article on why Sheridan is facing backlash.
Why is Taylor Sheridan being criticized for Yellowstone’s Bella Hadid cameo?
In the show’s episode, Wheatley’s love interest is named Sadie, played by Bella Hadid. She appeared alongside Wheatley and Beth (Kelly Reilly). At first, viewers may have thought Sadie was a masseuse employed by Wheatley, but it turns out she is his girlfriend instead.
Furthermore, I’d never consider working as a horse trainer, just like Sadie shared. Later on, Beth points out Wheatley’s disrespectful and patronizing demeanor, even questioning why he was considered a suitable partner. She then asks, “Ever seen him ride a horse before?
In a new setting, we find Wheatley and Beth engaged in a game of one-on-one strip poker with unique stakes. If Beth emerges victorious, Wheatley agrees to assist in managing livestock and farm equipment; if she loses, she must disrobe. However, the game takes an unexpected turn when Beth loses and begins to undress, but Wheatley intervenes promptly. He mentions his long-held desire to visit the ranch, which infuriates Beth due to his less than subtle attempt at flattery.
Nevertheless, the appearance of Wheatley for approximately 15 minutes in the episode sparked numerous online debates, with a variety of responses. Some viewers felt that, given it was almost the final episode, they preferred more focus on the Dutton family’s narratives rather than further development of the Sheridan character (as expressed by Fox News).
Others found it amusing that Sheridan had cast Hadid as his girlfriend, while at the same time criticizing him for being self-centered in writing a role specifically for his character. However, amidst this criticism, there were some fans who admired Sheridan’s acting abilities and were pleased with his decision to bring Hadid on board as a guest star.
