As a die-hard Outlander fan who has lived through the highs and lows of Jamie and Claire’s love story, I have to say that Claire’s decision to stay in the 18th century instead of returning to her own time in season 7 was one that tugged at my heartstrings.
In the 7th season’s 11th episode of Outlander, it appeared that Claire saw marriage to Lord John Grey as her sole escape from being arrested and executed for treason, given her predicament. Yet, one might wonder, couldn’t she have returned to her own time instead?
In simpler terms, Ian (who was quite young) posed a question that everyone else was thinking. Essentially, he wondered why Claire would return to her own time when it appeared that Brianna and Roger were thriving in the 1980s. It seemed plausible for Claire to be with her daughter and grandchildren in that era instead.
In the TV series, the motive for Claire was adjusted slightly compared to the original books. Nevertheless, the logic behind her actions remains valid, and it’s advantageous given how the episode concludes!
Claire’s home is in the past in Outlander season 7
Claire emphasized that her time has passed in the future, even though it was once her dwelling and Brianna remains there. However, she recognizes that the 18th century is where she truly belongs. Her mission lies in shaping a better future for her daughter and grandchildren.
Claire, alongside Jamie, pledged to contribute to shaping America as we know it today. Although Jamie is no longer present, Claire continues to honor their promise by lending her hand instead. Finding new purpose in life without Jamie, Claire remains steadfast and stands together with Young Ian, shaping the nation’s future.
Why doesn’t Claire travel in the Outlander books?
The books offer up a slightly different reasoning. It’s all to do with something that the show hasn’t put much of a focus on throughout the episodes.
Traveling through time isn’t a simple feat. It can lead to health complications in certain individuals, and it often puts a significant strain on one’s heart. We caught a glimpse of this in the seventh season of Outlander, specifically episodes 9 and 10, where Buck experienced heart problems following his journey through the stones. This plot device served as a means to transport Buck to Geillis, which then allowed the ensuing storyline to unfold.
As for the other time travelers, the series doesn’t delve into the mental and physical challenges they might face during time travel. It leaves out some potential risks involved.
In the books, Claire expresses her belief that she might not live if she took another journey through the stones. She’s anxious that her heart could fail on the other side of the stones, and even making it through is uncertain. Yet, there’s a life for her in the 18th century where she can contribute to shaping America. Thus, she concludes it’s wiser for her to remain in the past for safety reasons.
