As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Outlander’s virtual world, I must say that season 7, episode 10 was a rollercoaster of emotions. Young Ian’s return to America brought with it a whirlwind of nostalgia, reunion, and danger – much like my first time trying to beat Dark Souls on Hard Mode.
In the tenth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, young Ian successfully returned to America. This event provided an opportunity for him to converse with Rachel again and reconnect with Rollo. However, it also signified potential peril.
In this significant turn of events, the past returned to trouble Young Ian when Arch Bug reappeared. Despite Rachel’s innocence regarding Arch’s wife’s demise, it was now Young Ian’s return that prompted Arch to seek retribution.
In this instance, the scene presented additional opportunities for Rachel and Young Ian. Below, I list my top three favorite scenes featuring Young Ian from “Brotherly Love.
Young Ian and Rollo reunite
It seems like we’re witnessing a scene reminiscent of Rollo, but Young Ian is in it as well. Upon seeing his friend return, Rollo recognizes him instantly and sets off on a chase through the city. He’s on a mission to reconnect with his best pal, and I believe this scene ties back to the title of this episode. While the title primarily focuses on Ian and Jamie, there’s a strong bond between Young Ian and Rollo that could be termed as “brotherly love.
It’s apparent that a meeting takes place. Young Ian, undeniably, has longed for his dog, while Rollo has equally yearned for Young Ian. Their encounter, though brief, was heartwarming as they reunited, yet it was tainted by Young Ian’s concern for Rachel.
Young Ian jumping in to save Rachel
This scene was changed a little from the way I remember the book playing out. In the book, Rachel is pushing Young Ian to be more of a pacifist, and he doesn’t end up fighting Arch Bug—William is still the one to kill Arch. However, I never felt like that was right for Young Ian’s character.
In the program’s presentation, it focused more on Young Ian’s personality. He boldly engages in a battle with Arch, sustaining a gash on his arm as a result. Young Ian is prepared to go to great lengths to protect the person he cherishes deeply.
Figuring out how he and Rachel can be together
Initially, Young Ian expresses his feelings for Rachel, but she didn’t comprehend because he used a language other than English. Now, he decides to express his love in English, and does so eloquently. The subsequent event is an emotional moment not just for Young Ian, but also for him and Rachel as a couple.
In a straightforward manner, Young Ian acknowledges that despite adopting Quakerism for Rachel’s sake, his true feelings wouldn’t align with the faith. He understands that she wouldn’t prefer this, so he is sincere and transparent about it. He reveals his vulnerability but also expresses his desire for a glimmer of optimism to emerge from this situation. Rachel offers him that hope when she unequivocally states that he is her protector, symbolized by the wolf.
