Early Life

Jean-Pierre hails from Fort-de-France, Martinique (a region of France), where she was born to Haitian parents. She is the oldest of three siblings and at age five, her family relocated to Queens Village, a neighborhood in New York City’s Queens district.

In this family setup, the mother served as a home health aide and was an active member of her Pentecostal church, whereas the father, with an engineering past, held a job as a taxi driver.

Because of their busy work commitments, Jean-Pierre often found herself caring for her younger siblings who were eight and ten years younger than her. She describes her family as being strict, deeply religious (Catholic), and overbearing.

1993 saw Karine Jean-Pierre graduating from Kellenberg Memorial High School, a school on Long Island renowned for its college preparatory program.

Career

Following her graduate degree, Karine Jean-Pierre found employment as the leader in charge of legislative and fiscal issues for New York City Councilor James F. Gennaro. Additionally, she held a position as the regional director for the southeast region during John Edwards’ 2004 presidential campaign.

2006 saw her being hired as the liaison for Walmart Watch based in Washington, D.C. By 2014, she had joined the faculty at Columbia University, specializing in teaching global and public policy.

During Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, Jean-Pierre held the position of Southeastern Regional Political Director. He maintained this role within the White House Office of Political Affairs throughout Obama’s first term in office.

In the 2012 presidential re-election effort for Barack Obama, Karine Jean-Pierre served as the National Deputy Director for Battleground States. In this role, she managed the process of selecting delegates and ensuring ballot access, while also orchestrating political activity in pivotal states.

On November 29, 2020, the Biden-Harris administration named Jean-Pierre as their Principal Deputy Press Secretary. Notably, she made history on May 26, 2021, by becoming the first openly LGBTQ person and the first Black woman to lead a White House press briefing since 1991.
